I think the most important evaulation is the player himself (and parents) on what level of college football they can play at. If some ones runs a slow 40 time,or is a 5'11 lineman they are not going DI (FBS) or D1AA (FCS). I think too many times someone is the big fish in high school and think the transitition to college will not be that bad. From the experence I had personnally, and with my son, it was HUGE. I have seen many very good high school players try to play at a level they have no chance of every getting on the field, and quickly burn out and most do not make it to the Sophmore year as a player. I could not agree more that football is not fun when you are 4th or 5th on the depth charge and never get on the field on game day. College coaches like to keep their options open so will show interest in the player, a letter cost 50 cents, and an email nothing (if they think the player can play at that level), but they are saying that to more than just one player. The other thing that I would suggest is do a little homework and see how many players did the school your son is interest in bring in last year at the position he may play in college. The player could go to another school and get a chance to play, but may get caught in a numbers game if the school brought in several players at that position the year before.

In football that would be 1982, that may not seem that long ago to you but that would be 32 years.

As an outsider I know this used to be a sought after job with a strong football tradition. Has things changed in as far as not getting as much talent as in the past, or is it dealing with the administration? Just wondering.

Is this like electing the new Pope. Has smoke come out of Campbell County Board of Education and it takes another couple hours to announce who it is? Just kidding. I will bite who is it?

Let's cut to the chase and end all this cat and mouse stuff. I know of this girl that could not make the all A softball tournament this weekend and her primary sport is basketball. She is a very good athlete and also plays softball. She had a scheduling conflict with a major basketball AAU tourney this weekend out of state as well and had to make a hard choice to attend it instead. She will not be playing softball in college, and this basketball tourney was a great way to get exposure for getting college basketball coaches a chance to evaluate her to possibly continue her basketball career. From the scores of the games this weekend, (two wins and two loses) all went 5 innings or less due to the run rule, I don't think she would have made a difference on any of the games.

I don't have a dog in the fight, but Simon Kenton before Marksberry didn't have too many winning seasons. They struggled to beat a team at any level. Yes there has been growth in the Southern Kenton area to help his numbers, but he took a program that was about everybody's homecoming game and made them a very competitive team. Also, he has changed the culture of the team and with open enrollment in Kenton County is getting quality players to go there. Yes he can, and needs to beef up his regular season schedule some, but don't say Simon Kenton is better inspite of him.

I though RCC was hosting the party.

Not sure about this letdown after the all A. Ncc girls won 7 of the last 8 games of the regular season after the all A. (Only loss was to Notre Dame who was pretty good). Also won the 9th region and lost to the eventual state champs Butler by two points when no other school came within 10 points of them. Wow what a HUGE LETDOWN. The all A is an important tourny but not the main prize.

This is not going to be an quick fix for Brossart as far as the low numbers. There is a limited amount of football talent in the Central/Southern Campbell County area where Brossart gets its enrollment and there are other schools (Campbell County is improving, New Cath has had a very good run, and Cov Cath has even gotten a few with their strong tradition.) I don't think there is a lot of talent walking the halls of Brossart not playing (or they would be at another school playing). It will have to come from the grade school level and I think Brossart is really going to have to sell there program to get some of the grade school/middle school players to become a Mustang. Not going to be easy, but with going back to 1A after this year will certainly help as far as competing with schools in their district.

Bred's fought toe to toe with Butler all night. Even when it looked as if Butler would put the game out of reach the Bred's would scratch and fight back into the game. Free throws were not kind to Ncc and Butler has a lot of talent on their team. Must have rotated 10 to 11 players. Great year for Ncc and congrats to the four seniors for great careers. Best of luck to Butler.

The Camels lost a lot of talent from their last Senior class. This year may be a bit of rebuilding job. Coach Lickert is doing a very good job with the talent he has, but the talent will be down some this coming year.

The four team block of Lafayette vs. Glasgow, and Ncc vs. Butler is brutal. Whoever makes it out of those four teams to the final four, if they have anything left, I would put again anyone in the state. Should be two really good games.

Wow another nail biter that goes down to the final second in overtime! For the third game in a row Ncc is down at half. (21 to 18) Notre Dame had a four to six point lead for most of the second half, then with 4 and half minutes to go in regulation they try to take the air out of the ball. Ncc turns up the pressure and slowly chips away at the lead until it is tied under a minute to go. Both teams had chances to score but neither could put up any more points until overtime. (Tied at 44). It goes to over time and Notre Dame scores the first two points, that proved to be the last points scored for this season. Ncc ties it up under two minutes to go, and Ware hits a lay up as time expires in overtime to bring home the gold! Once again it is "survive and advance" to earn a trip to WKU. Oh my it doesn't get any easier because they will face a very good Butler team from Louisville in the first round of the girls sweet 16.

This rule is at every level and players jump into the defender at every level. Not saying it is a good rule but until it is changed it is the correct call.

What about the 15 block calls again Ncc girls when McClendon was driving to the basket. The refs were calling everything for the offense. NO ADVANTAGE either way due to the refs. The girls decided this one. Heck of a game and lets leave it at that. Both teams played their hearts out.

Wow what a game!! Usually when a team can't make an outside basket to save their life, and barely shoot over 50 percent from the free throw line they usually end up on the wrong side. However, as the late Jimmy V said, "survive and advance" and that is what Ncc did. Pure grit and willing themselves to victory they ended up two points better at the end. The star of the night was Dejah McClendon though. Basically putting the team on her back and she just flat couldn't be stopped. Ncc send 4 different girls to try and stop her and she just kept driving, and either hitting floaters or getting fouled and knocking down free throws. With both Mayhaus girl reduced to cheering from the bench due to foul trouble in the third period, it looked like Ncc was going to pull away with a 39 to 31 lead, but McClendon turned it up even more and brought the game to a tie at 39. The 4th quarter seemed to last an hour with all the lead changes and both teams fighting and scraping for every point. At the end Kiernan's two free throws proved to be the difference as now the Bred's have to come back to Earth and get ready for Notre Dame on Sunday evening to see who claims the regional crown.

I am going to go out on a limb and say the Catholic team wins. Which one I have no idea. I would guess it is the one that scores more points. Should be a tremendous game and both teams better strap it up. These are the two best teams in the 9th region, (Holmes not far behind).

A very tall order for the Bird's to try and get a victory against the Dawgs, but thats why they always say, "any given night." This isn't a best of 7 series. If Highlands gets down by 20 though they can always chant "let play football".

A whole bunch of points for Ncc and not quite as many for St. Henry. Ncc by 15 +

Amen LB on the refs and they were from the 7th region. (Louisville area). However, in their defense two of the officials did a pretty good job but one just wanted to go back to Louisville as fast as he could. Don't think he know he had a whistle, but if he knew he did he sure didn't know how to use it. (Must have had to get up for work early tomorrow). The only foul I know that he called was the fifth foul on Meyers as she pushed Lewis from Ncc who had the ball once about three feet and he was standing 10 feet away and he didn't call that, then finally she pushed Lewis out of bounds about three seconds later and he decided he better make the call. I can only hope he does not get anymore games up here. Not good. Besides that, it was for sure a game of two halves. Conner was red hot in the first half and Ncc struggled with shooting and turnovers. The second half the light came on for Ncc and Conner really struggled to make a basket. Most of the second half points from Conner came from the free throw line from Gambrel. She is a very good free throw shooter. Saturday night should be a fantastic night of bball. With Notre Dame v Highlands in the lid lifter and Ncc v Holy Cross in the night cap.

This is a little bit off topic to this thread but I would agree 100 percent with bballguy as far as what big schools are looking for in recruits. The 40 time and height are flat out the most important things. The weight they can put on if need be. I went through this a couple of years ago with my son and I agree camps and highlite films mean very little to DI fbs or DIAA fcs schools. The first thing they look at is 40 time and if it doesn't mean there standard the rest flat doesn't matter. I would speak HONESTLY with your high school coach if your son wants to play at the college level and ask the coach what level he would best have a chance to succeed in. Being a walk on at a DI school doesn't last long if the player doesn't have the talent and skills to make it there.

Dixie has been building the program the right way and have very good coaches at the helm. They took their lumps with a younger team a couple years ago but stuck with it and now have a good system and talent in place. They should be very competitive this year in a so so 6A district. If they stay healthy could make some noise in the playoffs.

The one thing that really hurts Simon Kenton through the years is lack of overall team speed. Sure they are probably one of the bigger teams weight wise in the state but look at the success of teams at any division in the state of Kentucky and they all have very good overall speed. (Highlands has made a living on that for years). I don't know if the Southern Kenton area just doesn't have a lot of fast/quick kids, but in this age of football it is easy to spread teams out and go wide on runs or have speedy receivers go deep and drop in the big bomb. i.e. last years playoff game against Butler. I wasn't at that game but I would dare to say SK was much bigger and bulkier that Butler. It is easy to just manhandle less talented teams but in 6A to bring home the Gold you have to have good overall speed and quickness to compete with the Louisville teams. This is not a knock on any part of the program but they are going to have to develope more speed to get to the top of the mountain.
