They were not going to be denied this year.

The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds softball team (7-3) claimed its first All “A” 9th Region crown since 2011. The Thoroughbreds beat St. Henry, 8-2 in the title game and run-ruled Lloyd Memorial, 10-0 in five innings in the semifinals.

Freshman pitcher Haley Meyers threw a three-hitter for NewCath. She struck out seven in the championship game.

The Thoroughbreds recorded 11 hits in the win. Loren Zimmerman led the way going 4-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in and Michaela Ware had two hits including a double. Casey Kohls and Molly Mertle added two hits each.

In the semifinals, Meyers threw a one-hit shutout. She struck out eight.

The Thoroughbreds recorded 11 hits. Ware, Kristen Schreiber and Zimmerman recorded two hits each. Schreiber had three runs batted in. Casey Kohls had a triple and three RBI with Morgan Martini adding two RBI.

The Thoroughbreds take on Conner on Tuesday. Game time is 5 p.m.

Details after the party. RCC9 your welcome to come.

I though RCC was hosting the party.

Congrats and don't think about hanging any type of banner.

Congrats to NCC! Good luck! With regard to the All A, I have question. This will anger my friends who are All A advocates, but such is life. What's the big deal about winning an All A championship in any sport? Isn't the goal to win a regular KHSAA Championship? It's my understanding that the All A was initiated so that small schools could compete for a so-called state championship in a sport that they normally could not win on a state wide level. Now that there are several small schools/teams that can compete with the larger schools on a state wide level, hasn't the All A outlived its usefulness? It seems to me that the All A is like the NIT in college basketball.

Thanks for thinking of those of us in the southern part of the county….:irked:

Sorry I missed the party. I've been locked up in my room all weekend plotting on how to pull off the upset of the perennial district champion...All A winner NCC. Us bigger schools just can't compete. I guess we'll get our opportunity to win it one day!

For those that are already asking yourselves...no, this is not me! Nor is this person related in any way!

However, I do admire their intelligence!

And the comparison would be correct. Except in college, when they win the NIT, the banner they hang says NIT winner, not NCAA champion.

Okay I'm not going any further in the softball forum!
