Holy Cross 12 Newport Central Catholic 0 (All A Classic State Tournament)

Featured Replies

Let's just say, the Breds aren't a morning team. Louisville Holy Cross pitcher, freshman Kameron Bowling, throws a 4 inning No-Hitter and an E6 in the 1st kept her from a perfect game. She also hit a HR in the 2nd and Bayley Brutscher with a Grand Slam in the same frame.

The NewCath defense was less than stellar, committing 7 errors in the 3 innings they were on the field, including 4 in a row and 5 out of 6, to start the 2nd inning. Taylor Burkart, playing shortstop for the missing Michaela Ware, committing two of those.

Holy Cross 2nd - E6, E5, E6, E5, 1B, E5, 1B, 1B, 1B, GS HR, HR, FO8, PO5, BB, FO8. 11 runs, 7 hits, 5 errors.

NewCath.......................0-0-0-0---0-0-7

Louisville Holy Cross 1-11-0-X--12-8-1

Despite this mornings debacle, the girls had a great time and enjoyed their weekend as a team.

Congrats on the trip and I am sure it was a good time. Your shortstop hurt? Its a shame she had to miss the tourney.

Let's cut to the chase and end all this cat and mouse stuff. I know of this girl that could not make the all A softball tournament this weekend and her primary sport is basketball. She is a very good athlete and also plays softball. She had a scheduling conflict with a major basketball AAU tourney this weekend out of state as well and had to make a hard choice to attend it instead. She will not be playing softball in college, and this basketball tourney was a great way to get exposure for getting college basketball coaches a chance to evaluate her to possibly continue her basketball career. From the scores of the games this weekend, (two wins and two loses) all went 5 innings or less due to the run rule, I don't think she would have made a difference on any of the games.

Okay so please tell us what scholarship offers she garners from having attended the major AAU basketball tourney this weekend. Now they have seen her play, right?

Don't think it works quite that way unless a player is a D1 highly sought after player. The "plan" would be to be seen at this tourney so that down the line when maybe a school does not get the players they thought they were going to get that they remember the other players seen at this tourney. Maybe it is a DII school that missed on their first 4 or 5 point guards or maybe it is some other school in a different circumstance. It never hurts to be seen by as many eyes as possible.

We just tell everyone you WILL NOT miss a practice or game once we start practice and cuts are made. Then they can make their choices

Okay, first I love Ms Ware. She is one of the most fun competitors to watch in the 9th region. I would watch her in any sport! And what I'm about to say has nothing to do with them. This situation just brings up an ute resting thought.

Let's pretend that Alexus Mayes played softball and was very good. Let's pretend that there was a softball showcase at a college the weekend of the A state. Let's pretend this year, she scheduled to be at the showcase and was going to miss the bball A state. Would we have a different feeling about it. I ask this because to people think it's okay because they are missing softball and softball doesn't mean much to many people in NKY so it's okay to miss for a sport that's "more important" than softball.

Just my opinion, but I would bet that if that scenario played out in the bball season, all heck would break loose. Am I wrong??

Also, I bet that we would be talking about how you let your teammates down and bball is so important to them because that's their primary sport and the want to do well in the A state. Well does NCC have any kids that play softball only? I'm sure winning in softball is just as important to them as winning in bball is to the bball girls.

Again I'm not trying to cause trouble. I have a daughter in the same situation. I'm

just asking if we all feel it's okay because we miss softball for bball. Would it be okay if it was the other way around? Honestly!

I don't have an pure answer for you but I think if a student/athlete is missing to be involved in something that can help pay for all or part of college it would be hard to hold that against them. I know it is not the same as a game but there have been football players who miss Summer practices to be in baseball tourneys because baseball is what they are going to play in college. And to me that is understandable.

Lou. Holy Cross was a well disciplined team who are well coached, and can flat-out hit the ball.

Funny but true, as Lou. Holy Cross Head Coach, Tony Young, was walking over to the 3rd base coaching box he stopped by our dugout an says to me, "so you are the infamous Lawnboy". :D

There is SOOOO much I'd like to say, but even I can't touch this with a 10 foot pole. The situation just stinks anyway you look at it, and that's from both sides of the fence.

I'll say it - scholarship tournaments, college showcases, etc. are the new trend for athletes to get noticed (for the majority and most part) for the money. It also provides a much easier way for the college coaches to see more prospects than going to one HS game. We all know that but the bottom line is - choose one - club sport or high school team sport. Any other way causes adversity and the coach is put into a lose, lose situation, especially if you have numbers in your program to cover those missing. At that point it becomes next player in. It is very unfair to the coaches and other players - IMO. Do what is best for you as an athlete, for the family, for your college chances - we will respect the decsion but in the end the coach is put between an rock and a hard place. I am not a proponent of picking one sport and playing it year round - regardless of the sport - for several major reasons, including growth plate development, repetitive motion injuries, mental/physical burnout, etc. I could say more but I agree with LB and RCC on this one. Either way - it stinks.

I'm just glad this thread didn't go down the other path, where LB is attacked for his less than stellar review of the less than stellar game.

This is soooo true. Momma always said "look out for number 1 cause noone else will!". And it is true that the showcase and events like that are where it happens for individuals. It's a tough spot as an athlete and a coach. There is no answer for it I also don't agree with playing only one sport...for many reasons.

But I do see the other side of it. If your teammates count on you (as I'm sure they do in this situation) and you have committed to them, I can see where "softball focused" kids and families could have a real problem with it. Like I said, I bet there would be stuff said if a good player missed bball for a sball showcase.

I have to imagine that this was not a last minute decision and the Ware's were upfront and communicated this as soon as they knew. Which I'm sure was awhile ago. That means that a high school coach is left making a decision and it's a no win situation for him. If you don't let her go, you appear not to care about the kid as an idividual. If you do let her go, you appear to be playing favorites and not what's best for the team. And when you're coaching at a small school, you only have so many athletes. You need them all to compete. There may not be a "next man up" in girls sports at a small school. So when the family comes to you and says they will be missing this and that, you have a decision to make. Do you allow it or not.

I say you allow it and there is discipline that comes with it, just the same if anyone else misses.

At the end of the day, if we all look deep enough into it, it's probably the right thing to do for all parties. It just sucks that it came down to her missing a tournament that is important to the team.

You know the All A classic, invitational, showdown, showcase, cagematch, STATE tournament!

I was not able to attend the All A state tournament but a friend of mine did. His thought was that Livingston was by far the best team in Owensboro followed by Lou. Holy Cross. Congrats to NCC and WV for representing NKY! He did say that Sunday morning Livingston was playing on the field next to WV and they hit 5 Bombs!

I'm just glad this thread didn't go down the other path, where LB is attacked for his less than stellar review of the less than stellar game.

There is still time. Be patient! :sssh:
