Congrats to Coach Mullins and the Raiders - big win from Union, KY Coach Mullins is a heckva man and comes from a great family. He's and old teammate of mine. We were members of a Junior Pro National Championship. For you youngsters that was the before Kentucky was playing AAU ball. And yes he was a pretty good player and great all-around athlete. Better not let him get outside and turn the corner running the football or it was 6. Oops this thread is about basketball. Anyhow a team is only as good as its leader and Ryle has a good one. Why would you not expect Newport to be that good this year? I'd like to know how many minutes McDaniel, Collins, Tucker, and Luther have logged since their sophmore year not to mention their AAU experience. Throw in a nice player like Foster and you have the makings of a very good team. Some might argue that the schedule was a little soft but that's not the player's fault after-all they're a single A school. They got also got a few breaks with Highlands and Boone not at full strength when they played. Indeed Highlands was expected to be a contender until injuries under-cut the season. Not making excuses but, if you take a couple of any teams top players off their team they're bound to struggle. What if Holmes lost Pittman and JJ for the year? Or New Cath was without Pangallo and Geisler or Boone lost Gabbard and Earls or Ryle's Coleman and McLeish were out for the season, and what if Newport was without the services of Foster and McDaniel for the season? I'd say that many over-looked Newport. Hope to see them continue to be successful.

Stick'in with the Bulldogs since my Birds went down. Toooooooooooooo much talent unless something dramatic happens. No one can match up with Pittman and I mean nobody. I know a lot of people don't like his attitude and showmanship (I'm not a big fan) but the boy can flat out bring it on the basketball court NO ONE will have an answer when it comes crunch time. I mean N-O-B-O-D-Y. Ricardo will refuse to let his team lose he's a winner and JJ can bring it also. Thats 3 reasons why Holmes will capture its third straight regional title and go on to make history and repeat as State Champs.

I would disagree... You would be shocked if one of the seniors told you what Coach Flynn said to him when he was struggling with his shooting... I'll leave it at that. If you know who I am ask me the next time you see me. If he couldn't get this group to buy into what he was trying to sell good luck with the rest. There is to much of a generation gap...

I do NOT want to take anything away from the NCC program your game speaks for itself. But I want to thank all the HHS boys especially the 8 seniors for such a fantastic ride over the last 6 years. You guys have provided many enjoyable moments and you guys have made bonds that will last you a lifetime. This is not the end its the close of a small chapter in a long life. We' ll be reading about you guys as doctors and future leaders. Your character, love, and passion for the game can never be measured in wins and loses. Good luck with whatever you do in the future and THANKS FOR THE EVERLASTING MEMORIES... Hope you don't pass judgement on Pittman either. He's a beast and no one compares to his athletic ability. R. Johnson and Pittman from Holmes are both worthy of Mr. Basketball honors and I'm not putting any other player down. Their achievements speak for themselves.

Birds will be a HUGE under-dog in this one with all the injuries, new coach etc. Except the Birds to bring the brass-knuckles and baseball bats to this one...:scared: It will be all out war once they step onto the court. The Birds will spoil the party! Destination unknown "Go Birds Go"!

Trinity... but Seneca is a VERY dangerous team especially if they are dropping the 3's. Wouldn't be surprised if this is the biggest upset of the year.

Looks Like the gaint killers will have to be in the house tonight We'll see what the Highlands boys are made of tonight... They're still pretty optimistic that the season can be salvaged. I think the entire staff - coaches, players and everyone that is involved has done a remarkable job of keeping the ship afloat. How many other teams could whether such a storm playing a top 20 schedule and still have a winning record to show? The team is playing very good ball right now despite the multipule setbacks. The good news is the Birds will be much healthier next week with Lother and Kowolonek back and Watson's shoulder feeling much better. Who in the 9th region has played up to their potential or over-achieved? Some teams have been a little more successful because of their soft schedule. Some teams lost a lot due to injuries or graduation. Holmes is the favorite I can't image Pittman laying down and letting the Holmes base down. The only thing that might stop the Bulldogs are untimely injuries/illnesses to one or more of the big three... or foul trouble especially Ricardo. I'm pulling for Highlands to pull the shocker if we can get a ticket to that dance. The pressure is on Dayton/NewCath to knock-out the Birds and Newport to win their first district championship in years. Highlands will be a huge, huge underdog to come out of the 36th... It would take a miracle. :clap: But I'm believer "GO BIRDS GO"!!! :clap:

Gordon, Dill, Smith-Keller, Stewart and Crowley started for the Birds The good news: Highlands still has a ticket to the 36th District dance even though they'll enter the district tournament a huge underdog. "Cats Den" Newport HS old gym last game was played in 1980. When it first opened it was the crown jewel of gyms in the ninth region. They use to crank the heat up before a game and legend was if you weren't 10 points better than the Wildcats going in you didn't have a prayer of coming out with a "W".

Watson's shoulder injury not expected to be serious. Examined by the doctor Sat. expects to be released to play this Monday. Thats great news hope to see him on the court soon.

Agreed-saw the same thing in the Seneca game when Highlands was playing against them in the Republic Bank tournament in Lexington over the holidays. Seneca drained 8 out 13 3's in the 1st half yet played zone most of the game. I believe Seneca ended up nailing 13/24 3's. Match-ups that I was expecting to start the game: Lother-Slusher Kowolonek-R. Johnson Grote-J. Johnson Stewart-Rice Watson-Pittman (I would have went with Watson's strength and experience in this match-up)

Highlands game against Simon Kenton has been called-off for tonight (Sat).. The game was being played at Holmes.
