Newport Central Catholic 68 Highlands 48

Final in the 36th District Tournament. NCC advances to play Newport in the finals this weekend.

The Birds jumped out on top in the 1st qtr as they attacked the inside and hit a couple 3's. They had 19 points in the 1st qtr which is very uncharacteristic of them.

The Breds came out firing in the 2nd qtr as Schmidt and Pangallo lit it up and Hightchew played very aggressive as well scoring a couple nice baskets. Geisler was pretty much a non-factor in the 1st half and pretty much throughout the game.

Ben Watson played one heckuva game for Highlands. I would say he had to score over 20 points. Smith-Keller and Lother were also knocking down 3's for the Birds.

NCc jumped up by 11 to start the 3rd qtr but the Birds fought back to cut it to 3 points 43-40 on a huge Smith-Keller 3 pointer.

The Breds responded though outscoring the Birds 25-8 to finish the game.

The score is a little misleading as the Birds had to foul at the end and were forcing up some shots but the Breds were atleast 10 points better tonight.

Congrats to the Breds and a big congrats to the Highlands Seniors for great careers.

Grant Pangallo played the game of his life tonight. This kid is the best point guard in the 9th Region and one of the best in the state hands down. His quickness, ability to knock down long range 3's, free throw shooting not to mention his ability to score taking it to the rack is just unreal.

He really stepped up tonight, Highlands really didnt have an answer for his play.

I do NOT want to take anything away from the NCC program your game speaks for itself.

But I want to thank all the HHS boys especially the 8 seniors for such a fantastic ride over the last 6 years. You guys have provided many enjoyable moments and you guys have made bonds that will last you a lifetime.

This is not the end its the close of a small chapter in a long life. We' ll be reading about you guys as doctors and future leaders. Your character, love, and passion for the game can never be measured in wins and loses. Good luck with whatever you do in the future and THANKS FOR THE EVERLASTING MEMORIES...

Hope to see you back on the court soon whether its in college or at the Milk House in Orlando, Florida playing in that 18U division. Rock-On Birds Rock-On.

This HHS team just never lived up to their capabilities. I know injuries played a factor which is unfortunate.

Puzzling team.

Nice win for the Breds.

Congrats to the Breds. They have as good a chance as any of 5 teams IMO to win the region (NCC, Newport, Holmes, Boone, Ryle). Best wishes to all HHS seniors. Tough year with so many injuries - kind of a "snakebit" year in that regard.

Tough game for Grote and Grubbs to watch srom the bench in their sweat suits as well.

Nice post Catbird!

How many games did HHS have their full arsenal this year?

Is there a hotter team in the 9th right now other than NCC? 7-1 since the ALL A FINALS Loss to Newport. That only loss was a close game vs Holmes. I don't think anyone wants to see them on there side of the bracket at regionals.

Clyde I think the last time may have been before Christmas and then Grote was still not ready.

Nky you are right they are dangerous. They really don't have any depth at all. They brought a couple kids in off the bench when Meyer and Hightchew went out with foul trouble and they struggled. The staeting 5 they put out there is very good though. Meyer takes it strong to the rack and battles the boards. Even Hightchew can score when called upon. They didn't even need Geisler tonight to be honest.

Grant Pangallo was fantastic tonight. He put the Breds on his back and was not going to let their season end. 9th region tournament is going to be fun to watch. Holmes and Boone have to be the favorites going in but NCC and Newport are scary good.

Congratulations to Coach Brannen and his staff. They work extremely hard and have their team peaking at the right time.

I knew Highlands would have a hard time matching up. But how do you lose Pangallo in transition so easily? Grant came open in transition on numerous occations and just knocked down everything. He had a great game. I still do not know how NCC does not establish Geisler better in the post, though. On a night like tonight when they are raining threes you do not notice that. But if they could establish Geisler first and then go out side, you would think they would be an even stronger team.

As for Highlands, Ben Watson was the only reason they were even in the game. He played GREAT!

Puzzling team.

If it wasn't injuries, what was it?
