How many games did HHS have their full arsenal this year?

Last year's junior starters of Kowolonek, Grote, Watson, Grubbs and Lother started 0 games together as seniors.

Hate to see Highland's season end on this note. With the eight seniors coming back this year, the Birds expectations were high.

Injuries kept this team behind the "eight ball" all season. They just couldn't get it going. Kowoloneck struggled this year with his knees and I know this hampered his performance all season. Hope the time off allows his knees to heal so he can perform at the next level. He is a real competitor.

Good luck to all the young men.

Breds are a very dangerous team, to say the least. I wouldn't want to be the coach that has to prepare for them in the first round of the region.

The only problem is see with NCC is that they lack depth and live and die by the 3. If they aren't hitting from outside, they become an average 9th region team. (See the first quarter against Holmes as proof, or the first game against Highlands)

Second year in a row the Breds have ended Highlands season in a big way. Good luck to all the seniors from Highlands. All are great young men both on and off the court.

When was the last time Highlands failed to make the regional tournament?

Highlands (14-10) - Watson 6 3 15, Lother 4 1 11, Smith-Keller 3 0 9, Kowolonek 1 4 6,, Gordon 1 1 3, Dean 1 0 2, Stewart 1 0 2. Totals 17 8 48.

Newport Central Catholic (18-7) - Pangallo 9 2 25, Giesler 6 2 14, Schmidt 4 0 12, Hightchew 5 1 11, Meyer 2 2 6. Totals 26 7 68.

Highlands 19 11 14 4 -48

NewCath 11 25 16 16 -68

3-pointers: H 6 (Lother 2, Gordon, Smith-Keller 3); NCC 9 (Pangallo 5, Schmidt 4).

Geisler finished with a double double: 14 pts, 12 rbs.

Didn't HHS lose to Boone in the Regional tourney last year?

I was referring to the district tournament. Guess I worded that wrong.

Congrats to Newcath, disappointing year for Highlands this year as I know expectations were high. Injuries killed this group of seniors year.

Way to go Breds!!!! NCC completely out hustled Highlands. It looked as if NCC could take it to the rack whenever they wanted. (Pangallo, Highchew, Meyer.) Derek Schmitt knocking down 4 3's. Somebody mentioned Geisler as a non-factor, I don't consider a double-double a non-factor. Jake played a great game. Grant Pangallo was pumped, the couple guys I seen trying to guard him had no answer. Should be a great game come Saturday night.

Good luck to all the Highlands Seniors.

Tough season for the Birds. The program has been building for this season, bitter disapponitment not to even make the regionals. Hopefully Coach Flynn can figure out a way to get some consistency at Highlands. Something that has been lacking for some time. Congrats to NCC.

I mentioned that that needed to use him more. Yes he had a double double, but all of his points were off offensive rebounds, which it is fine to score that way. But if you have a guy that nobody can rebound against, don'tt you think that means he should be able to score at will?? he could have had 30 tonight. No matter what, NCC played very well, knocking down every shot they saw.

Clyde I think the last time may have been before Christmas and then Grote was still not ready.

Nky you are right they are dangerous. They really don't have any depth at all. They brought a couple kids in off the bench when Meyer and Hightchew went out with foul trouble and they struggled. The staeting 5 they put out there is very good though. Meyer takes it strong to the rack and battles the boards. Even Hightchew can score when called upon. They didn't even need Geisler tonight to be honest.

Are you serious? One of the reasons they're playing so well is their bench. Dettmer has been outstanding on defense the last several games and Lampe has been knocking down some 3's, 4 against Holmes. And not needing Giesler's 14 pts 12 rbs 3 blocks and great interior defense, come on. They are winning as a team, very good unselfish play.

I was going to mention this. NewCath is a match-up nightmare for Highlands, b/c they were more athletic than Highlands almost everywhere on the perimeter. NewCath just spread them out and made them defend the whole half-court. I was impressed that they never gave up, even when #50 went unconcious against the zone in the 1st quarter and they were down 11. They flat out wanted it more.

BTW, NewCath's student section was awesome.

Just curious what you mean here by getting some consistency. This group of seniors were primarily basketball players first and they could not get the job done for whatever reason. While the program had some success at the lower levels this year, there are not a lot of kids that are going to be basketball first athletes as things stand now.

As for the game, I would not say that NCC outhustled HHS but rather they were much quicker on the perimeter which caused all kinds of matchup problems. I like a previous poster said do not understand how Pangallo continued to come down the floor and get wide open looks. If anything, I would say that NCC looked to want it more as the Birds looked to be simply going through the motions in the second half.

First off congrats to NCC for an impressive win......Grant played a GREAT game and the Breds gained confidence as the game progressed. Jake was a factor throughout the game, although his point total was low in the first half, he did block shots and grab big rebounds that kept them in this game early. HHS had a tough time matching up defensively after the Breds got the lead. Well executed game plan at that point as NCC took it to the rim off the dribble to finish this one off.

As far as Highlands ...... what a tough ending for such a talented and accomplished group. They are a great group of young men. This season of so much promise never got off the ground with a run of injuries that is almost hard to imagine. Grubbs & Grote played less than 10 games each (Grote tried on two occasions in the season but couldn't get over the back injury) Kowolonek missed about 10 games (including the last two weeks) Watson & Lother missed several games late in the season and HHS never played a single game with everyone available......what a shame. A valiant effort to try to keep it together. Place this type of setback on ANY team in the State and you would have a similar result. No shame to this group...walk with heads held high....

NCC v. Newport should be a great showdown. Cody, Casey and the boys try to write history in Newport w/ Grant, Jake and Co. standing in the way.....should be great basketball on Sat !
