Cov Cath is starting Wednesday this week

If I'm not mistaken, the new coach(Wirth) played on this Moeller team.

IMO the only 2 assistants from his staff last year that I would classify as close to 'great', and that I would like to see stay on at CovCath are Boyd and Bosse.

Officially he resigned from CovCath. It just was not the great fit for him everyone had hoped it would be. This in no way means he is not a good coach, and I too agree that Newport would be a much better fit for him. It is similar to where he has had success in the past (Finneytown), and IMO if giving the chance at Newport he will again be successful. I do not know the other candidates for Newport position, so I can't say who would be the best fit, but Brossart would be a good one IMO.

This should be a pretty good pick. Judging from what he did at Badin, he appears to do a good job of tweaking his systems to fit the players strengths. I know he used alot of 4-5 receiver sets last year, and switched mid year from calling the offense to calling the defense. Also had several 'That's My Boy' finalists over the last 5 years.

Not saying this won't be the situation, but if it is what happens to the 9-10 seniors that started last year?

I was referring to last years JV contest, which was another strong outing.

Alot of the key positions on JV last year were being filled by juniors (this years seniors). IMO alot of last years juniors should have been given the opportunity to contribute on the varsity level more than they were. There should be a good mix of jr/sr on this years team.

Could it be the best of both worlds happening in Park Hills?

I understand well over 30 applications were received for the position. If in fact these are the two front runners, IMO can't go wrong with either. I would prefer the offensive scheme of one over the other, but both could be good choices.

This would be his best position at the next level. He played safety on the State Championship team in 2006.

I am somewhat torn on Spring Football. I obviously don't think it hurts but am not sure how much it really helps. If you use Ohio football as a comparison, which is without a doubt one of the hotbeds of HS football talent in the country, they don't allow Spring Football yet constantly have nationally ranked teams and more D1 signees than Ky. Also, I think alot of the teams in NKy don't have most of their starters from the 'fast' positions (QB, RB, WR, LB) due to alot of them playing baseball or running track for their school. While this would seem to help with strengthening your backups, does it really help with the team you will field in the Fall? I don't have the answer, but I am sure someone out there does.

I don't agree with kids who are not in HS (grades 9-12) playing HS sports. I may be old fashioned but having gone to HS in Ohio where this is not permitted, and having coached Basketball in Ky I still feel that HS sports are for HS student-athletes. Yes the kid may have the physical talent to compete with older athletes at their school, but what about the talent at their opponents school? And I don't think it is just about talent. You have the emotional side to deal with as well, and as a society pushing kids to grow up earlier than they should. I don't want my middle school daughter being forced into the teenage world any sooner than she needs to be. Let them enjoy being kids, there is still 4 years of HS to be exposed to the play and social side. I would be very surprised if there were any kid out there that missed out on a scholarship or chance to go to the next level because they only played 4 years of HS sports and not 5-8!

Highlands has a great program, great support, great kids....but not everything related to N Ky HS Football revolves around them. A coach can still be very successful and very well received by doing other things right. Anyway you look at it, Cov Cath is a top 5 position in N Ky. Beating HHS is a great bonus, but I doubt it is the main criteria for considering this position.

Whoever the new coach is, if he comes in and only relies on the jr and soph's next season and discounts the sr class he will also have some early problems. While imo next year's soph and jr have some good players, there is some talent in the sr class as well if utilized properly. Part of the problem Brossart had was building up this years freshman and soph class to the jr and sr to the point of creating some animosity. Don't get me wrong, they are both solid classes but you need engaged, solid sr leadership to be successful. And you need to be able to utilize the talent you have, and take into account the intangibles of the players (heart, desire, coachability, etc.)

I think Dad was a multi-sport athlete in HS, pretty decent basketball player at Deer Park.

This was in the paper about CCH accepting applications. It stated applications were being accepted until February 4.

I should of qualified this further, the KHSAA rules used to be for football and basketball only, in order to be a head coach you needed to be a full time employee of the school system in which you are coaching (teacher, administrator, janitor, guidance counselor, etc). This rule did not apply to any other sport.

Unless the KHSAA rules have changed, in order to be a Head Football or Basketball Coach in Ky you have to be a full time employee of the school. You can get a 'hardship' waiver if no-one at the school is qualified or wants the position.

He will learn from this and be a better head coach at his next stop. Here's wishing him the best.

I agree that these should be the main criteria for what happens in the future. Based on these criteria it is time for a change. This doesn't mean Coach Brossart is a bad coach, just not the right coach for this situation.
