Agreed. I liked the fact that they came right back to him to 'get him back on the horse' and he responded. I was afraid he was going to be looking for Ryle's safety all year after the hit he took last week on the deep route.

I was impressed with Lex Cath's speed on both sides of the ball. The running back (#30) made some cuts that were pretty amazing. Special teams for Lex Cath also outplayed Cov Cath special teams which helped tremendously in field position, and set up the safety at the beginning of the game. Cov Cath running game looked good early, but then fizzled. This passing game has to get on track. There are open receivers but Erpenbeck is either missing them or is too quick to take off running, IMO. The very catchable dropped passes by Connelly also hurt, especially the one where he had his guy beat deep. Overall excellent effort by the Colonels and you will continue to see improvement each week. It would have been nice to schedule like college basketball and put a few 'cupcakes' on the schedule this year to get things going.

Completley inaccurate! Three sophmores started (WR, DB, LB) with 3-4 additional ones seeing extensive action. 2 underclassman started on the O line, 1 on D line with another playing over half the game on D line. 3 soph receivers played close to half the game, several underclassman saw extensive action at LB. Overall there were 13 Srs that started the game, 9underclassman. Will the starting lineup be tweaked, possibly, were kids not played because the are underclassman, absolutely not. In fact, IMO several underclassman were played that are not ready for the varsity level, but it is great that they got an opportunity to show what they can do and what they need to do to be ready at this level.

I think Ryle's D will match up well against Highland's O and vice versa. This will come down to field position and special teams. While Ryle's special teams were not horrible against Cov Cath, they lost the battle on field position and Cov Cath couldn't convert the opportunities. Highlands will convert the opportunities. This should be a close one which will make the 2nd time they play even more interesting.

Unfortunately, this group of Seniors has also been saddled with the worst coaching in decades at Cov Cath. This is the first year they really have had quality coaching. I do agree that they don't have the 1-2 'studs' the last couple of classes have had. They are also a victim of circumstances and 'bad luck' with at least 1 kid that probably would have started this year deciding he had enough of football after the last 2 years, and then 2 more starters out for the year with injuries. Couple this with no real depth yet, since most of the Jr and Soph are not ready for the varsity level, and the early part of the season will be challenging. I do still feel that when all is said and done, this years team will be overall 'better' and will have a big hand in getting things back on track in Park Hills.

He did play with the Freshman and did very well.

On paper this should be an easy one for Dixie...but since the game is played on the field and not on paper, I'm still going with Dixie but in a close one.

A freshman QB was moved up to JV/Varsity.

Very well said. If in fact he was better than Guidugli last year, why wasn't he on the field? I've never heard of a coach (especially one with several state titles) put his 2nd best player on the field instead of the best at a position. This in itself opens up another complete thread! I have a feeling at the end of the year Bardo may very well be the best QB in NKY or the state for that matter, but it is hard to rate him based on potential.

I had heard there are close to 50 boys on the freshman team, and close to 80 on the 7th/8th grade teams. These numbers alone should bode well for the future of the program. There could be a few from last years freshman squad getting some playing time on Varsity. Most of them are a year or two away from being impact players, but several could be by time they are Seniors.

With these numbers, if they were the best of the RB/WR I think I would have stepped outside the box and considered and OL that maybe had a few pancakes?

The ruling is that the runner in Lane 3 was interfered with because he had to leave his lane due to the runner in Lane 4 falling into Lane 3. While this may not have had any impact on the winner, it could have impact on other places and points. Officials made the right call to re-run this race.

With the positive support returning to the program, and more of a HS instead of a NFL schedule (though still one of the toughest in N KY with LaSalle, Ryle, Highlands, Lex Cath and Lou St X) things should be greatly improved. If defense can match what should be a pretty decent offense, they should be a very tough game for everyone.

My point exactly, the current system rewards complacency by allowing at least a dozen teams into the playoffs that have no business being there. The Beechwoods, Highlands, Boyle Countys, etc will be able to compete whether there are 6 or 3 classes. They probably wouldn't be able to run the table for mulitple years in a row but would be competitive.

IMO they should move up to at least 2A. Would still have local district with NCC, Holy Cross, etc. And would actually be challenged more in district play. Then when they win the 2A State it at least means something. If Cov Cath can play up 1 and Highlands 2 classes, Beechwood with their history and program can play up 1 class.

When you have teams that technically can go winless during the regular season and make the playoffs, it is not a good system. You will continue to have the same teams dominate their class, not just a 2 or 3peat but for much longer. Unless something is put in that if you 3peat as state champions, or possibly even making the title game 3 years in a row, you have to move up in class for a year or two. That may help even things out, and do what I think the 6 class system was set up to do....let every high school experience playoff success.

I heard a rumor that Coach Brossart from Cov Cath has landed on the Dixie staff. Can anyone confirm this?

Where on the football field are you needed more than at QB? At the HS level especially, it starts at the QB position. You don't take your best QB and play him somewhere else. I do think that the 2 Sr QBs last year played very well. But I also know that, in hindsight the coaching staff wished they would have given Erpenbeck a chance to compete for more playing time at QB. Early in the season he was practicing almost exclusively at LB.

The initial schedule I saw did have Cooper on it, no Lou X or Lex Catholic. I am assuming one of them replaced Holmes. Not sure what happened with Cooper.

Brayden Erpenbeck (sr to be) has the skills that are a very good fit for this type of offense, I equate him to a mini-Brett Favre. He is elusive, has a strong arm and is willing to take a few chances and they usually turn out to be positive. He started the last game last year vs Lou St X and did pretty well considering it was his 1st varsity start. Nothing against the 2 Sr QBs last year, but many felt he should have been the starter all along. Has the total package-size, speed, arm strength, toughness, leadership. Also has no clue what a hook-slide is!
