Covington Catholic/Covington Holy Cross Scrimmage

Covington Catholic / Cov Holy Cross Scrimmage

If you would like to find out exactly what happen in the scrimmage click here to listen to the broadcast.

No score from me as this was a scrimmage nothing more.....but....

The CovCath Freshmen totally dominated the young men from Cov Holy Cross, which really surprised me as usually the CovCath "seniors in training" struggle early, but with having a eight grade team last year, you can see the difference. Outstanding job Freddie's.

The CovCath JV did the same as the "seniors in training".

Varsity game: Note the format was 10 "O" then 10 "D" etc. for period of time, then they played a full game for a half.

The Cov Holy Cross team at this moment, at least to me, looks like the favorite to win the 2A in their region. The HC QB impressed the heck out of me as the young man was impressive. My only concern is how is he going to be injury free by the end of the year as the young man not only is HC best offensive player but also their best defensive player. IMO he is on the field far too much on the "D" side and I hope for HC that he doesn't get hurt.

CovCath other than the first 10 "O" for HC impressed the heck out of me on both sides of the ball. The CovCath QB is going to be a huge surprise to a lot of folks from HHS, Scott, and Dixie. The young man is indeed a big time player. Also on the "O" side of the CovCath team, the "O" line gave the CovCath QB plenty of time to look down the field to find a open man.

The CovCath "D" started out quite slowly but with a couple of changes the "D" turned it around and did a rather nice job.

All and all I was quite impressed with the "Back to the Future" team that Coach Wirth and his staff has brought back to CovCath.

Finally the Wooten stadium complex with the new fencing, Grotto, and paint job looks as nice as any football complex anywhere in Kentucky. Cograts!

If you count the 3, 10-play series that each Varsity received starting at the 50, and then the 1/2 of real game scrimmage, CCH won 35-14.

CCH is a work in progress but should be better than last season without question.

HC has a lot of talent on offense, and I think they can make a run at state.

Not surprised at all to hear about HC's QB. He is rated one of the top 7 QB's in the state by rivals.com. I agree HC is going to be a contender but it is a program that needs to do it once to prove they can, to themselves as much as anyone else. There seems to be enough talent there this year to make it happen. How did Roenker look, the main RB for HC? Who is the QB for CCH?

Quite frankly it was the HC QB left, HC QB right and the HC QB throwing. Didn't really see Andy do all that much or when HC did run, the CovCath "D" line pretty much shut it down.

QB CovCath? Brayden Erpenbeck....Strong arm, big, quick, and smart! He has the size that he would just as soon run over you as around you but he is smarter than that, to do it!

Coach Wirth offense was built for a type of QB Erpenbeck is....

BTW I failed to mention that four of the starting eleven on the CovCath "D" were out with injuries and the one player that the Colonels knew for certain was a stud, Michael Robinson is out for the season. If Robinson were able to play this season you would have heard a lot of Erpenbeck to Robinson for SIX......

One other note, man oh man has Paul Ritter grown this summer. I can remember him as a little kid playing in the dirt on the baseball field while his sister played soccer for me and even this spring being a PR/CR for the CovCath baseball team. He has had to put on 25/35 pounds of muscle (it isn't fat) and looks great.

CovCath will be playing Ryle @ Ryle Friday Aug 21 at 7:30pm

I like Markel as a qb but he's not top 7. His future, if he desires to play after high school, is not at qb.

With that said, he will have a strong year. I, too, think its HC's year to win NKY 2A.

The kid that impressed me the most for HC was #8 Norris. Nice receiver.

Looks like HC wants to open up the offense a bit more this year.

Roenker did OK. The HC o-line did OK but far from strong which hurt Andy's ability to get his power going.

Erpenbeck is a better qb IMO than Markel simply due to passing. They both run extremely well.

Who is the staring qb for the CCH frosh? He looked pretty darn good.

Yes I would like to know his name also!

I was sitting on the varsity half of the field behind the CovCath bench and noticed what seemed like to me a complete rout of the HC team by the CovCath "Seniors in training" team.

At one point while I was watching the varsity it seemed to me at least that in the "Seniors in training" ten chances with the ball, they most have scored on at least four/five of there ten attempts.

They (the CovCath "Seniors in Training") were indeed impressive and the young QB was very, very impressive. Outstanding job young man whomever you are!

When you talk about "Seniors in Training", are you talking about Seniors that are working for a starting position, JV, Frosh, or what?

At CovCath (at least back in the day) the Frosh were called "Seniors in Training" as even our Freshmen were better than any other HS Frosh and as such were called "Seniors in Training" instead of Freshmen.

Besides it has a nice ring to it as no one likes to be called a Freshmen anyway!

Isn't there a pretty good frosh QB who is on JV?

A freshman QB was moved up to JV/Varsity.

Did he participate with the frosh yesterday? I thought I only saw one JV qb.

What grade is the Erpenbeck kid in?

It seems like, based on theoldguys posts, that CovCath is totally and all the way back already. So much for the thoughts that the Birds will roll over the Colonels. Sounds like it will be a good game.
