KnightTime007 Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 I wasn't impressed with either team. A lot of mistakes by the Knights and the Colonels. It's definitely a down year for both of these programs. Raglin has speed for LexCath, but is too much of a north-south runner and the O-Line for LexCath doesn't give Ward enough time in the pocket to be a truly effective passer. The run defense for LexCath is very suspect as well, which has given up a ton of yards in the first two weeks of the season. CovCath has a tremendous athlete in Schaeffer, who ran all over the Knights. The pass offense was very weak for the Colonels, but the D played well against the Knights and stopped Raglin from making the explosive plays he was looking for. CovCath looks to be a couple years from their usual self and the Knights need to shore up on defense and give the QB some more protection as well. I'm happy the Knights could come away with a victory, but it was a very sloppy effort. I believe St. X will have their way with Catholic next Friday. It could be ugly.
knights52 Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 The score is what I was most expecting. LexCath played with without 2 of there better players in Loyd Amos and Letton. Once those players return you will see a smoother o-line and better run defense. To disagree with knightime, I felt Raglin was too much of an east-west runner during times he need to run north-south. I felt he lost a bit of yards due to that. CovCath just seemed to have a hard time to get into any groove. There gb seemed mobile but at times just didn't seem to have the accuracy needed to make the throws. Good luck to CovCath in the rest of the season. Good win knights, now its on to a extremely tough opponent in St.X.
Clyde Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 The good news is that CCH got better tonight. Many of us already knew this but others got to see that Leo Schaeffer is a really good strong running back. He needs to be the focal point. With him, Erpenbeck running from the qb position, and the good combo of Slaybaugh and Gray you have a strong running game. The passing game simply isn't there and its not on one player. Its the entire passing game. The kicking game hurt CCH tonight. Punting and kickoffs were inadequate. Give CCH's D credit. They only gave up 21 points despite LC always having a short field. I don't remember one LC possession in the 2nd half that didn't start on the CCH side of midfield. We knew Connaughton was a player. Now we can see that Ritter and Schaeffer are becoming players to be reckoned with as well. Keep working.

Schaeffer is an outstanding power runner and if he gets into the open field, look out! Once a passing game is developed, you guys will have a pretty potent offense to contend with. Good luck the rest of the season and hope to play you guys again soon.
Clyde Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 Leo had 138 yards on only 13 carries. He's a 25 carry per game back IMO. Ritter led the Colonels in tackles with 8.5 .
Theoldguy Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 (edited) Clyde is correct the "D" of CovCath did a very good job considering LexCath started inside the 50 in most of it's "O" series for the entire game. While CovCath didn't commit many penalties tonight one just killed them. After getting the first down late in the fourth quarter on a 3rd down play, it's gets called back for not enough men on the line. I was wondering why, with the way the LexCath team was lineup up for the on sided kick with seconds on the clock, the CovCath kicker just didn't kick it to the other side of the field. The entire LexCath team as well as the CovCath teams were lineup up to the right of the kicker and no one and I mean no one could have gotten the ball if the kicker had just pushed the ball to his left. If not for some dropped passes CovCath could have won this game, but you can see the improvement in this week over last week and while it is a work in progress, they are getting better..... I also wanted to thank all the fine folks at LexCath for their kindness and hospitably, and especially for the pizza on the way home. Good luck and thanks again. Schaffer, with 13 attempts for 138 yards, won the CovCath's MVP award. Erpenbeck completed 11 of 25 passes for 94 yards, with one interception. CovCath narrowly out gained LexCath, 322 yards to 314. Paul Ritter led the Colonels with 8 1/2 tackles, including one for a loss. Edited August 30, 2009 by Theoldguy

Clyde Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 I don't believe I've even seen a real game where one team used 3 different qb's in the 1st qtr like LC did tonight.
KnightTime007 Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 What is wrong with Amos and Letton? I know Letton had an injury that he was resting. Not sure about Amos.

knights52 Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 I know Letton had an injury that he was resting. Not sure about Amos. Amos had severe back problems, I forget the full detail though but he should be back full go this next week. With Letton it has to do with his leg, I forget the full extent to his injury, but he did not dress against CovCath but should be back within the next week or two. I just realized at the end of this I seem really forgetful.
KnightTime007 Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 I don't believe I've even seen a real game where one team used 3 different qb's in the 1st qtr like LC did tonight. It's quite a different offensive scheme and I don't believe it helps for team chemistry and flow. It looks like it hindered LexCath's performance tonight. Hopefully we can settle on one guy and get a solid game plan in effect before too long.
