Good point. Everyone is focusing on the sideline infraction when in fact there were many more miscues that also impacted the outcome. Part of it is probably not wanting to admit that maybe the loss was a result of how you performed overall. It is easier to feel that if not for a bad call or something that was supposedly out of your control, you would have won. I think the biggest factor in this game was the number of Dixie kids that went both ways and just ran out of gas at the end.

Since the beginning of sports. If your team is intentionally committing penalties then I would say they deserve to lose!

The majority of penalties are unintentional accidents. I do know that the sideline infraction was an area that was supposed to be strictly enforced this year. Most teams have a coach during the game 'roaming' the sidelines making sure everyone stays back. While this call obviously had an impact on the game, it wasn't the only call that impacted the game. I would offer that all calls have some impact on the game, some more than others. If I had already been warned once on the sideline, I think I would of made sure everyone, and I mean everyone was way behind the line the rest of the game.

Very exciting game to watch on both sides. Erpenbeck, Gray, Deglow, Connaughton made some big plays for the Blue Colonels as did Wilson, Haggerty, Pike and Smith for the Red Colonels. I would say both sides gave it their all on the field. Regarding the referee side of things, when the ref calls the captains from both teams together after about the 2nd or 3rd series, this tells me there was some jawing or extra-curricular activites going on that they were not going to allow. As a player realize that and understand they are watching, maybe closer than normal.

Coach is responsible for his sideline,whether they are 'officially' part of his team or not. Just like a team can be penalized for unruly fan behavior.

Except for last week, they have been putting up 25+ points consistently.

If I am not mistaken, the rule is for everyone. It is a safety issue so the refs have room to run up and down the sideline. Most refs allow the coaches to enter this area as long as they don't 'linger' but basically go in and out of the area as they shout instructions.

He hasn't played more than a few snaps a game and on special teams for the varsity since about week 3 or 4.

It was the 3rd personal foul called against Highlands, maybe 5+ minutes to go in the game?

Surpised to see the 3 personal fouls against Highlands, no reason for these. IMO #27 should have been ejected for the flagrant punch he threw at a Cov Cath player late in the game and away from the ball.

You bring up several very good and valid points. The last 2 years were truly a 'team' effort by Cov Cath-administration, coaching staff, players and fans... and we all know how that worked out! I think in most people's eyes things have improved in all of these areas and I believe will continue to improve over the next several years. On paper, right now Highlands is probably a 2, maybe 3 score better than Cov Cath. One of the biggest things working against Cov Cath tomorrow is the Cinti St X/Highlands game. I am pretty sure no-one outside of the Highlands community gave Highlands much of a chance against St X. I am pretty sure Highlands will keep that in mind and not permit many openings for Cov Cath to do the same to them. Both teams will play hard and hopefully walk away knowing they gave their best effort.

Right now I think I would rather play my home games on Simon Kenton's field! It would be interesting to see how many of the football players on Scott, Dixie and Simon Kenton's teams are taking advantage of the open enrollment policy. How different would these teams look if they didn't have this policy?

Scott played hard today and I was impressed with determination and attitude of several of the Scott players. Unfortunately they just don't have the talent or depth to compete at this level. What I saw today and with the number of kids they have going both ways and on special teams they are at a good 1A maybe 2A level.

I watched the game with grads from Dixie, Beechwood and St X. I think the St X grad was the least upset with the Highlands victory. His feeling was if Highlands-St X played 10 times, St X comes out on top 9 of those and this was the one for Highlands. I think the other guys are waiting for their 1 against Highlands!

Guru, you can add to your 'Perfect Storm' list that St X also had the funeral of one of their classmates this morning. That is alot to deal with for anyone, let alone teenagers. While not wanting to take anything away from Highlands on their win, it is understandable why St X looked flat or not really into this game. Good Luck to both teams the rest of the way.

Friday nights in the Fall are for HS Football. Saturdays are for JV Football, College Football and Soccer. I for one think you would see attendance go up if they played on Friday nights.

I realize that, my point was to emphasize that this current team doesn't have the 'stud factor' from the last two years, but is doing OK as a team.

The difficulty in trying to compare last years team with this years team is there are several variables that have changed, not just the players on the field. Obviously the current team doesn't have the talent level of a Van Sant, Deters, Buckley, etc. but are 'doing more with less' instead of 'doing less with more'. I do agree that if you take the complete team from last year and switch with this years, records would be about the same. I think the optimisim comes from do you feel you are on your way up, or on your way down?

Great effort by Beechwood, but if not for a few Cov Cath miscues this one was heading towards running clock. Beechwood just didn't have the talent or depth to hang with them.

Beechwood's sheer determination will keep this game close, but from what I've heard I don't think they have the overall team speed and skill level to pull out a W. Both teams are a little down talent-wise from what we all expect from these two teams, but Beechwood is down more and that will be the difference. I also think Cov Cath coaching staff is doing a great job of developing a game plan that works to perfection, as evidenced by the LaSalle and Campbell County games where they came out on their first 2 possessions and marched right down the field to score.

Two plays determined the outcome of this game, the bad snap on the punt that went for a safety and the fumbled kick return that caused Cov Cath to start on their own 1 yard line. Those two plays gave LaSalle great field position on 2 possessions and resulted in a 16 point swing. The big difference I am seeing in Cov Cath is they are doing a much better job of overcoming these mistakes and continuing to fight. LaSalle is a good team. They may not do very well in their league this year, but I don't think there is a single team in N Ky that would do real well if their district consisted of Elder, Moeller and Cinti St X. Cov Cath is still in the learning phase with all the changes that were implemented this year. They only have 5-6 returning starters from last year, and a few of them have switched positions. Now I have always felt that if you need to lose to learn something you were pretty dim to begin with, and I don't think Cov Cath is learning from the loses but is learning from the effort. They are learning that once they cut down on the unforced errors, they will give teams fits.
