Colonels_Wear_Blue Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 (edited) It seems to me that in the last 10-15 years, most all of the schools in Northern Kentucky have been able to put out at least one or two truly competitive teams that have done well, at the very least, on a regional level. Some teams have struggled a little more than others, but none more than Scott High School. Leaving out Walton-Verona, Bishop Brossart, and Cooper for their relative youth in football competition, Boone, Campbell, and Kenton County programs include: Beechwood, Bellevue, Boone County, Campbell County, Conner, Cov Cath, Dayton, Dixie Heights, Highlands, Holmes, Holy Cross, Lloyd Memorial, Ludlow, Newport Catholic, Newport, Ryle, Scott, and Simon Kenton. Scott's program is around 30 years old, if I'm not mistaken. However, over those 30 years, I only know of one season (1990) where they posted a winning record. I know they've had 5 or 6 head coaches in their history, and turnaround on the coaching staff is a hard thing for a program to deal with, but I don't particularly see why, with the size of their student body and with the apparent talent pool in Northen Kentucky, Scott seems to come up so short year after year. They get some talent from year to year, usually having one or two hallmark players on each team. As for this year, I for one think it would be a shame not to see senior Zach Sowder get some major recognition. He is one heck of an athlete. Scott even graduated one of the relatively few recent NFL success stories from Northern Kentucky in the past several years with Doug Pelfry '88. I'd be interested to know what other people's opinions are: What is Scott's trouble, and how they can improve? Edited October 12, 2009 by Birdsfan Typo
RyleRAID34 Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 (edited) Two words - open enrollment. Edited October 12, 2009 by Ram Rule 13
OlDog75 Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Two words: Open enrollment! It's a lot cheaper than paying tuition. Scott seems to enjoy open enrollment success in other sports.
Colonels_Wear_Blue Posted October 12, 2009 Author Posted October 12, 2009 Can you clarify on the open enrollment? I would assume you're referring to their lack of bounded 'district' lines for their school?
hja1224 Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Can you clarify on the open enrollment? I would assume you're referring to their lack of bounded 'district' lines for their school? Kenton County has "open enrollment" which means you can go to any school in your county. So, if you are a good football player, would you rather play on Dixie's field or Scott's? I hear that Scott is getting the new field soon so that may help keep kids.

Right now I think I would rather play my home games on Simon Kenton's field! It would be interesting to see how many of the football players on Scott, Dixie and Simon Kenton's teams are taking advantage of the open enrollment policy. How different would these teams look if they didn't have this policy?

How different would these teams look if they didn't have this policy? That would be good info to see how much impact open enrollment in the Kenton County system truly impacts Scott. I know 3 or 4 years ago Dixie had one of the best QB's in N. Ky. in Greg Preston who resides in the Scott area.
BaseballIsLife Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Scott has some very good athletes roaming the halls but alot of them just don't play football from what I can tell. My son attended Scott was about 6'4" and played baseball and the several of the football coaches tried to recruit him over to the football team but to no avail. I know they have done this with several other players and the same result has happened. Basically when your best athletes are playing other sports that will hurt the football program as well as the open-enrollment policy where some of the very good athletes in Scott's district end up choosing to attend a different school. Where Scott sits a very large amount of kids don't end up going to Scott as Holy Cross, Dixie, Simon Kenton, and Covington Catholic draw a large contigent of the student population from their area. Right now Scott needs to focus on getting their facilities upgraded and focus on keeping as many athletes of theirs within their district as well as continue to try and recruit some of the better athletes within the school to play football. I've been around Scott for quite awhile now and I know their situation very well. Even now Scott is starting to lose enrollment numbers and based on from what I'm hearing they will be dropping to sub-1000 students here soon. When my son entered Scott as a freshman they had 1200 students. At this rate, from what I'm hearing, Scott may indeed be dropped to a 4A school soon. However that might not make much of a difference as there isn't really a close 4A football district around for them so I don't see them dropping form 5A for awhile now unless their enrollment numbers get really dreadful.

Don't be surprised if the old 5A district pretty much becomes a 4A district. Holmes has already dropped to 4A. Highlands is a 4A school by enrollment. I believe Cov Cath may also be 4A by enrollment. So if Scott drops to 4A size, there is your district right there.

Voice of Reason Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 HHS is actually a 3A school by enrollment and CovCath is indeed a 4A school by enrollment! I know everyone has been saying that HHS is 3A but the enrollment numbers were posted in another thread and HHS is actually 4A. Lower part of the 4A schools but they are 4A by enrollment on that list, which I believe is the most current data.
