Open enrollment and CovCath seam to take quite a toll on Scott Football. Realignment to 4A and facility upgrades may bring about a turning point.

 

Another program that struggles to compete is Campbell County. When Shaun Alexander was at Boone, Campbell had a great team, but Boone rode on Shaun's back to win a very close play-off battle. That has been some time ago, and Campbell has not risen to that level since. If I'm not mistaken, at 1300 +, Campbell is the largest HS in NKY.

 

According to the KHSAA, SK and Ryle are a bit larger.

Take it from someone who is a Scott Alum and had kids that went to Scott. Football at Scott will always be so so at best. Facilities right now might make a difference but let's go back to when Scott was built best facilities around and best high school building for school but football was so so and now here we are 30 years later facilities do need an upgrade and football is still so so.

 

Scott just isn't known for football and never will be. Every other sport at Scott is top notch and have won Regional Titles before. I am not trying to belittle the football program because I played football there and so did my son and I am proud they come out to play every Friday night no matter what the outcome is but let's move on I wish Scott the best in football and I hope I am around to see them with a winning season.

 

Can someone please tell me why Simon Kenton would be getting a practice bubble built ?

If this is true I hope Scott gets one to because this would be a definate unfair advantage going Simon Kentons way for sports not just football but all outside sports when it comes to practice especially in bad weather. Someone needs to make sure the Kenton County Board of Education remembers that Scott still only has 1 gym compared to Simon and Dixie's 2 gyms I think I would build Scott a new gym before I would build a practice bubble for SK.

As a Scott graduate I can tell you the biggest problem is open enrollment. I can name off the top of my head 12-15 kids who started and some STARRED for other programs during my years at Scott. Given the opportunity to go to Dixie, or SK or even a Cov Cath or Highlands over Scott, wouldn't you? It's going to take a miracle to turn things around. The attitude at the school in regards to the program is extremely negative, and typically the best kids have their sights set on another school. It would take a class of kids who dedicate to each other, in their NKYFL days that they will stay together and be part of the solution, but the easier choice is to go to Dixie or SK and have a shot to be good right away.

And SK's recent success diminishes Scott's chances even more...

 

Right on target. It is going to take a group of NKYFL kids to stick together to have a chance at winning. SK was able to do this, and I don't see how you can say there is tradition with SK football, look at how bad they were a few years ago even through the nineties.

The problem with Scott is exactly what everyone is saying, OPEN ENROLLMENT. This has absolutely killed Scott in the past. For instance Greg Preston who lives right behind Scott. Jared Lorenzen lived in Scott district before he moved because the Scott coach at the time told him he needed to play for Woodland instead of Raiders if he wanted to play Varsity Football. Joey Bricking, Steven Benson, Josh Bleser (CCH doesn't count but he still lives in Scott District), Miles Simpson could have either gone to Scott depending on whose address he took, his mom's or dad's. Look at all this NKY area talent that has gone to different schools because Scott's football program has no tradition. Now I dont blame them, why if football is going to be your main sport why not go to school that has traditon? If open enrollment was not a factor, this program would have alot of tradition and obviously would have won games.

 

Another reason to add is alot of Scott's talent does roam in the halls because nobody wants to play for a bad team year in an year out. And this will never change unless the program wins games and with open enrollment and talent roaming in the halls, the program is never going to see a winning season or even compete.

The last measureable accomplishment was a 4A district championship a few years ago. SK football hasn't been a powerhouse either until recently.

Open enrollment is a big reason they cannot do this though. It's hard to build a program when you can't get kids to stay around to build it.

 

He isn't doing it for football reasons, but Jordan Hansel is in Scott's district. He's getting D-1 offers and is on a top tier team. How much different is that Scott program if Jordan has to stay as well does an above average RB? Mr. Sowder's winning percentage would be a lot better I can assure you that!

I would have to agree that open enrollment has definitely been unkind to Scott's football program, but I definitely see your point about Scott's other athletic programs. They have numerous other athletic programs that have at very least been decent contenders over the years.

 

Let me ask this question then: after 30 years, why has Scott been unable to develop the "tradition" that so many have noted their football team lacks? I realize the comparison is not quite apples to apples, but Ryle has only had a football team since the mid-90's, and Bishop Brossart, Cooper and Walton-Verona are all in their first couple of years with football programs. Ryle seems to have the "tradition" thing taken care of, and the other three, although they may not have the tenure to claim any "tradition", at least have some kind of reputation developing. Why no tradition at Scott after 3 decades?

You have to win at some point. You can build a program the right way, have everything going in the right direction, but nothing will derail it more than losing. Not many teams can do what Central is doing and play every tough team in the state and lose to them, but get better for it. Most teams need wins and learning how to win against lesser competition. Then you start getting tougher and tougher opponents.
