Didn't see that (sorry), but I am on record as saying that with Holmes now in 4A and Scott looking more and more like they will more down to 4A, it's a natural that HHS and CovCath will move down to 4A also.

 

Wouldn't be a bit surprised to see Dixie being move up to 6A if the above happens.

It's my understanding that at the time of the last re-alignment, Highlands fell into 3A but according to the numbers RIGHT NOW, they would be classified as 4A if such a re-alignment occurred right now. So, Highlands is still technically a "3A" sized school, since that's how they were categorized at the time of the most recent re-alignment. It will be interesting to see what happens with the next re-alignment!

I'll say the same thing for Scott that I said about Dayton - they need to change up their schedule. Instead of playing the 6A schools, play some 3A and 4A schools that you can go into as the favorite. Get 2 or 3 games like that on the schedule and then even in down years you will have wins you can count on and hopefully have a chance for .500 every year. That will do a lot for the morale and maybe change the headset about the team.

Two Words: No Tradition

Going back to the question about open enrollment and "Scott" players going to Dixie or Simon Kenton, is Miles Simpson a Scott area student? I believe he played for the Raiders in the NKYFL so he could be either a Scott or Dixie area resident.

There is no 3 star half back or 4 star QB roaming the hallways at Scott. There may be some very good athletes that attend Scott and choose not to play football but IMO, very good athletes don't always make very good football players. If they did, there are some urban school's in the tri-state area that would dominate in football every year.

 

I think that if a high school kid is a good football player, than chances are he's playing football for his school. Why would a kid waste his high school years not playing a sport that he would excel at? The best football players at Scott are probably playing football. I do realize that being part of a losing tradition is tough for a high school kid. But if a kid has the attitude that he doesn't want to be part of a team because they are losers, than I'm not sure I would want that kid on my team anyhow.

 

What Scott needs to do is work hard on making the football players they do have better. That comes with, but not limited to, changing the culture through guidance from the coaching staff. I do believe Scott is trying to do that.

 

Numbers are really low with the Jr. class on the football team, but the Soph and Fresh. numbers are pretty good. I only know of 1 kid that Scott has lost off the Woodland Middle School team from the past 2 years from "open enrollment". I can't speak on the Summit View kids.

 

The new stadium is coming, the middle school program is improving and I know for a fact the kids are hungry. I think it will take a little more time but, IMO, better days are ahead for the Scott football program.

It's pure and simple. If you play football, you transfer to Dixie or Simon per the open enrollment. Otherwise, you go to Highlands, CCH, or BW.

They do play some smaller schools like Bellevue (1A), Lloyd (2A), Holmes (4A), Harrison County (4A). They also play Cooper a 6A school but this is only their 2nd year fielding a varsity football team so as of right now they are on the level of a 3A school or so. So they are following exactly what you mentioned and are playing the smaller/weaker schools but still are having limitied success. They have only 2 wins on the year and they have come from Lloyd 34-26 and Harrison County 36-30.

 

The other 6A schools they play is Conner and Simon Kenton. SK is most likely Scott's biggest rival in all sports so its hard to not schedule them since the schools have gone way back in both of their respective athletic programs.

 

So that only really leaves you Conner as a game you could substitute for another smaller school.

 

Scott obviously has to play Dixie, CovCath and Highlands as they are in their district and they can't get around that.

 

Bascially Scott is trying what you are saying and is still having limited success against the smaller schools. By scheduling weaker teams it becomes a double edge sword really. If you beat them then its great and gives a confidence boost to the team but if they lose they have to go home knowing they lost to a team several classifications lower than them and its demoralizing. Sure Scott is trying to build its program from the bottom up but as of right now its still not getting anywhere. This is only Campbell's 2nd year as head coach and I know the Scott administration is giving him all the time he needs as well as the things he needs to accomplish what he is doing. Scott can only go up but has failed to do so over the years. Hopefully they are able to turn it around.

The only thing I will state is that we were given advice by a parent whose son played in the late 90's and suffered a concussion and other injuries. They felt their son was put into the varsity games before he was ready. The conditioning program was also brought up.

I have lived near Scott for the Majority of my life, and I have seen much talent around the area, but they decide not to play football because they are playing basketball or baseball and do not want to get injured for their sport while playing football for a team that usually doesnt get many wins and has no tradition, there is no drive. Also another case is they want to play at Dixie or SK, where there is tradition and they have a chance at winning. I do not blame the kids for winning, but I think it is a shame, and hope for the best for Scott in the future.

Miles lived in Taylor Mill until 4th grade, then his mom moved to Independence. To answer the question, Miles lives in Simon Kenton district.

That would be good info to see how much impact open enrollment in the Kenton County system truly impacts Scott. I know 3 or 4 years ago Dixie had one of the best QB's in N. Ky. in Greg Preston who resides in the Scott area.

 

Would you rather play on Dixie's field or Scott's? I hear that Scott is getting the new field soon so that may help keep kids.

 

With this being said Greg Preston played his home games on the worst field in NKY. So kids are not choosing SK and Dixie over Scott because of the field.

Oh, there's a tradition.....

Open enrollment and CovCath seam to take quite a toll on Scott Football. Realignment to 4A and facility upgrades may bring about a turning point.

 

Another program that struggles to compete is Campbell County. When Shaun Alexander was at Boone, Campbell had a great team, but Boone rode on Shaun's back to win a very close play-off battle. That has been some time ago, and Campbell has not risen to that level since. If I'm not mistaken, at 1300 +, Campbell is the largest HS in NKY.

As a Scott graduate I can tell you the biggest problem is open enrollment. I can name off the top of my head 12-15 kids who started and some STARRED for other programs during my years at Scott. Given the opportunity to go to Dixie, or SK or even a Cov Cath or Highlands over Scott, wouldn't you? It's going to take a miracle to turn things around. The attitude at the school in regards to the program is extremely negative, and typically the best kids have their sights set on another school. It would take a class of kids who dedicate to each other, in their NKYFL days that they will stay together and be part of the solution, but the easier choice is to go to Dixie or SK and have a shot to be good right away.

And SK's recent success diminishes Scott's chances even more...
