Nice catch, gc. Williamsburg made the Sweet 16 three times in the 1940's...their only previous trips to state.

They had to rearrange the original first round brackets...after the snow delays...so that both of Henderson's teams wouldn't be playing at the same time. They left the original match-ups intact. In the 1930's and '40's, it was common for the first game winner...each of the first two nights...to play one another in the semi-finals. I never read any reasoning for that, but the practice changed over the years.

Sic 'em, Williamsburg! What a year. Championship game in the Single A football playoffs. Now to the basketball state tournament for the first time ever. I love small school success stories.

Not sure I ever knew all the details, but weren't they limited to a certain number of games...and no post-season? That would take them out of the mix, as far as region standings, etc. would go.

I can remember Fred Harper, coach at Todd County Central, begging KHSAA officials to just let his players walk into Rupp Arena the morning of the opening state tournament game in 1981. He told them most of his players had never been out of Todd County, let alone see a basketball arena. No soap. And, sure enough, when his kids hit the floor, you talk about deer in the headlights. They recovered eventually, but not enough to overcome a huge deficit early and lost to Boyd County by ten. No; teams are not allowed to practice at Rupp.

I have never seen a list. Campbellsville broadcasters or newspaper guys would be your best bet. The numbers I saw were in a tweet last night: "Junior Quentin Goodin's 26 pts makes him all-time leading scorer at #TaylorCounty High School with 2,137 pts, passing Ken Hatcher (2,136)."

Clem played at Campbellsville Durham through 1961, his sophomore year. Played his last two years at Taylor County, so not the school's (previous) all-time leading scorer.

Whoa malachi, put on your thinking cap for a moment. I was surprised to learn of Kentucky's format when I came here. But I understand it. If you try, you can too. The teams that tried to lose were girls teams...in Tennessee--different playoff format altogether. There is not an instance in Kentucky when a team loses a tournament game on purpose. The only time a loser advances...is in the district championship game. And the "reward" is a game against the champion from another district...and you don't know which one until after you have played. No advantage to be gained whatsoever. None. The "advantage" of having both finalists advance is a larger region tournament...meaning larger gate receipts...money which is spread among twice as many teams. Region tourneys have 7 games compared to 3 otherwise.

One thing you won't be allowed to mess with is "money." District tournaments, the way they have been set up for decades, bring in money. That's why the district runner-up is allowed to advance. Makes a 7-game region tournament instead of a 3-game affair. And more schools get to share in the proceeds. If you intersperse the districts and have teams playing in places many of their fans have never gone, attendance will suffer tremendously. Especially at smaller venues in out-of-the-way places. Many folks who frequent district tournaments with neighbor schools won't have any interest in going to a town & school they have never been to before, in the winter, in a crowded parking/gym seating situation. I agree: don't like three-team districts But re-districting in many parts of the state just isn't feasible. In the first/second region, it's geography. In far Eastern Kentucky, I believe it's the same thing. One reason Kentucky still has a single class system: tradition. People like it. Especially as we get older. Compiling and posting district tournament scores state-wide, I always felt bad for the people whose schools were moved...especially more than once. That takes away from tradition...and interest...and (bottom line) money. (I was just thinking: some posters just get too wordy. And then...I re-read this one. )

"I would guess Allen Co and Allen Co-Scottsville are considered separate schools, but I couldn't find that information for sure." They consolidated in the fall of 1974. It was decided that the semi-final losers in Districts 57 and 59 would play for the final two spots in the region. Not sure how they chose those teams, the sequence of games, nor which would advance, but here's what happened: Feb. 27 at Sheldon Clark Sheldon Clark 67, Magoffin County 60 Feb. 27 at Sheldon Clark Phelps 77, Pike County Central 68 (Pike Central lost…but advanced to play the next night along with Sheldon Clark) Feb. 28 at Pike Central Pike County Central 90, Sheldon Clark 82 (then… Phelps & Pike Central were selected to go to the region) From an outsider's perspective it appears Bugs Bunny was right, "Thew's something scwewy going on awound hew."

In the 2nd, the size of Henderson County is a big factor too They are so much larger than Union County or Webster County (& Providence before that.)
