Active Region Tournament Streaks

Featured Replies

I looked up the teams who have been to the most consecutive region tournaments in each region. Some are very obvious, but several are very surprising.

Team (First year of the streak)

1st: Marshall Co (1992)

2nd: Henderson Co (1993)

3rd: Grayson Co (2004)

4th: Russellville (2004)

5th: Bardstown (2004)

6th: Fairdale (2007)

7th: Central (1974) - All of these until 2012 came in the 6th region.

7th: Male (1985) - Longest of strictly 7th region appearances.

8th: Simon Kenton (2006)

9th: Dixie Heights (2001)

10th: Montgomery Co (2001)

11th: Madison Central (1986)

12th: Wayne Co (2007)

13th: Clay Co (1978)

14th: Breathitt Co (2007)

15th: Belfry (2004)

16th: Ashland (1992)

Top 10:

1. Central-1974

2. Clay Co-1978

3. Male-1985

4. Madison Central-1986

5. Ballard-1987

6. Marshall Co-1992

6. Ashland-1992

8. Henderson Co-1993

9. Eastern-2000

10. Dixie Heigths-2001

10. Montgomery Co-2001

10. Rowan Co-2001

Longest active streak with none of the appearances resulting in a region Championship:

Russellville (2004)

Belfry (2004)

Other interesting Notes:

Central joined the KHSAA in 1957. They missed the region their first two years, and have only missed twice since then.

Ballard has as many state titles (3) as years they've missed the region (1971-their first year to play varsity, 1981 and 1986

Clay Co has only missed the region once since 1950.

This was some quick research, so feel free to let me know if I've missed anything.

Could it be that some of these districts are just that weak, that some of these teams have long streaks?

It's certainly a contributing factor. Central has historically been placed with Shawnee and Portland Christian, and then a couple others have been in and out. Many years they have actually played in a three team district, which made it a virtual certainty that they'd advance. The only time Central has ever been in danger were the years where the random draw placed them in an elimination game with Shawnee. That's what happened the last time they missed (1973, lost 96-95 - Central won it all the following year), and occurred in 1977, 1978, 1986, and 1989. You're talking about no more than a handful of years in the entire streak where they were even remotely in danger.

That's not to say it isn't impressive. There were still those years and there are times when teams take nosedives and the unthinkable happens. But it is certainly worth noting the competition some of these teams go against.

Agree with Lawnboy.

A lot of this has to do with some of these teams just being in awful districts.

Breathitt in the 14th could end this year.

Great example Dixie

The irony is that Russellville's streak started after missing two straight years - and before those misses they won three of four region titles. I think it's worth taking it a step further and noting that not only has Russellville not won a title, they haven't even played for one in that streak. They've advanced to the region semifinals only 5 times out of the 11 straight years they've been in the tournament. They owe a huge portion of their streak to the fact that Todd County Central and Logan County took extended nosedives into mediocrity. In fact, Todd County Central is still there.

I wouldn't be surprised if Russellville's streak ends this year, and then there's no telling how long Russell County will take it (they have made every region tournament since entering the region in 2006 because the 16th District has been terrible much of the time beyond Clinton County).

In the 2nd, the size of Henderson County is a big factor too They are so much larger than Union County or Webster County (& Providence before that.)

Nice job. For Breathitt county in the 14th and Ashland in the 16th there is a chance both of those teams streaks end this year.

That certainly applies to Dixie (and that's no knock against the Red Colonels).

I'm trying to think of the last time CCH missed the regional tournament. Seems like it would have been longer than 2001, but maybe I'm missing something.

Has Dixie won region since '01? I don't think so.

The last time CCH didn't make the regional was in 2009 when they were knocked out by Beechwood in the first round of the District. I remember that game well it was at HC and I was doing the clock ! That was my senior year. ( We lost to eventual state champ Holmes in the first round)

Dixie has won the regional since 2001. They won it in 2011 in 4 OTs over NCC. Another game I remember vividly

I completely forgot about both. Thanks for the refresher! :thumb:

No problem!

Great example Dixie

I'd like to know how many years Holy Cross has had a top 5 9th region team but not made it to the region tournament because of being in the same district as Holmes and Covcath.
