Jason, as I understand it, the original Litkenhous Ratings used only scores of games between Kentucky teams. No other criteria. Was that the case? Has anything been added to the mix since then?

Lit-Ratings get more accurate as the season goes along. The more comparative scores in the computer, the better basis for a list. I think Lit is the best available source for a state-wide rating. Does anyone think the Herald-Leader's Cantrell is better? If so, why? (Not arguing; just curious. I have never followed that one.) First basketball Lit-Ratings in the Courier-Journal were published in 1935 and the football one came shortly thereafter (if memory serves.)

My schedule says Owensboro plays host to Madisonville Friday night...and that Hopkinsville entertains a Tennessee team. Not sure which is correct....

Well, not as many as I would have thought. Did play-by-play for 23 years (246 games) all for the same radio station. Saw 34 different in-state schools (4 of which no longer exist) and 7 from out-of-state.

Here are my notes on his career: "...graduated from Central City in 1972; was all-district and all-region player; went to Belmont College in Nashville; coached gals at Central City for 3 years; was assistant to Mike West at Daviess County for 3 years First head coaching job was at Central City where he led the guys' program for that school's last 8 years ('83-90) with a 178-82 record and the 3rd region championship in 1989. When that became Muhlenberg North, he was the Stars’ coach for their first 5 years (1991-1995) with a 125-32 record; won the 3rd region in 1994 and was a state semi-finalist; in 1995 went 25-4 and resigned. Was head coach at McLean County in 1998 and finished 3-22. Head coach at Apollo 6 years (2005-2010) with a 116-68 record; won the 3rd region championship in 2006 and was state runner-up--losing championship game to Jeffersontown 48-61." When Tony went back to Muhlenberg County as an assistant, most presumed that he would eventually be head coach there...and it happened...but without the desired results (41-49 in three seasons.) Maybe Thomas Wolfe was right: You can never go home.

The school was just referred to as "Covington" at the state tournaments in 1918, 1920, 1927, 1928, and 1931. The first time we see "Covington Holmes" at state is 1939. Similar, in that way, to Henderson...which officially was Henderson Barrett Manual Training School...but known state-wide as Henderson. Then, when Henderson County was formed in the fall of 1954, it was commonly called "Henderson City" as a differentiator.

The KHSAA file in my records listed the following schools, but not their mascot or colors: A.J. Jolly - Jolly Rogers Burlington - Tomcats Cold Springs Crescent Springs Hebron Independence - Trappers Ludlow St. James - - - - - Covington was the forerunner of Covington Holmes - Red & White - Bulldogs. Interestingly, that file listed the school as Covington Holmes and as having joined the KHSAA in 1917...the first year a list of member schools was made. The school wasn't known as Holmes state-wide for quite some time after that, if I'm not mistaken. Alexandria is not listed, but Campbell County IS...and as having joined in 1924. I'm guessing it was actually Alexandria that joined that year--the first tournament score I found for Campbell County (after just a cursory glance) was 1937. While it did not list Alexandria....it DID show Campbell County as the purple, gold and white and with the nickname Camels. No wonder Puck is asking for help in the identification. Looks like you guys who live in that area will have to take the ball and run with it. (Oops that's a football metaphor. You "run with it" in basketball and they call travelling.)

Don Parson was head coach at Madisonville for the last 30 of his 37 years as a head coach.

Wayne County starters (with season averages) Jimmy John Owens 22 ppg, 11 rebs Rodney Duncan 10, Mark Weaver 8, David Clark 13, Julius Green 17, 6 Green had 28 and Owens 20 in the championship game. Wayne County had a last-second shot that would have tied it. Alas.... ------------------------------ Dale Maybrey just finished his 34th season as head coach at P.R.P.

Starting in 1932, there were 16 regions across the state. There were 8 regions from 1928-1931. There were 6 regions in 1927. From 1922-1926 there were 16 to 18 regions. Things started changing with the introduction of class basketball in 1927...which lasted until 1933. The way I understood it, it was Vandy's call. As a Hoosier native and a long-time Kentucky H.S. play-by-play man I hate, hate, hate to see the series end, but things seem to be falling apart. Durn it!

Someone please correct me. I think I just saw a tweet that said Camron Justice is already enrolled in summer school at Vandy...and they won't let him go practice and play with the Kentucky all-stars vs. Indiana this week. Please tell me that isn't true.

Henderson Holy Name is K-8. Owensboro Catholic has never been to the Sweet 16. Was 3rd region runner-up in 2013, 2005, 1983, 1974, 1973, 1957, and a predecessor (St. Joseph) in 1947. Getting Tim Riley will make things even more interesting in Owensboro. I hope he will be pleased with his decision.

I don't think it's "bush league." I like it a whole lot better than a batter dropping his bat and grabbing at his face and yelling...as if something is hurting his eye...just as the pitcher starts to release the ball. Hard for the pitcher not to balk.
