  1. Updating my records and the KHSAA website doesn't have a coaching name for the Lions. Thanks!
  2. Wayland: blue & white Carr Creek: blue & white Info from Jeff Bridgeman's "Kentucky High School Basketball Encyclopedia"...has all that stuff. Fantastic book...available from Amazon.
  3. Great hire indeed! Wouldn't think that's what Christian County foes want to hear.
  4. Here are the 2015 Mr. Football nominees (released by the Associated Press and written about in the Courier-Journal December 19th) Mason Alstatt, Lafayette, running back Quinton Baker, Ashland Blazer, running back Rodjay Burns, Trinity, wide receiver/defensive back Kash Daniel, Paintsville, quarterback/linebacker Riley Hall, Pulaski County, quarterback Lamarius Kinslow, Fern Creek, wide receiver/linebacker Steven Nelson, North Laurel, running back/defensive back Hayden Shelton, Male, quarterback Luke Woods, Whitley County, quarterback/defensive back
  5. He was coach at Ranger Jr. College in Texas this past year...went 31-7 and finished 4th in the NJCAA tournament. Then had to forfeit all of the wins for using an ineligible player.
  6. The field was in miserable condition, and the weather was even worse. They decided a tie was the admirable thing to do.
  7. "I hope he can make Purdue a power house." Me too! Boiler Up!
  8. I used to work with a guy who started wearing a New England Patriots sweatshirt...for no apparent reason other than Christmas had just passed. When I asked him why, he said, "My wife bought it for me." When again asked why, he said "Not sure but I'm afraid if I don't wear it, I won't get lucky."
  9. I never get tired of reading Mike Fields' stories. Glad he is still able to share via the KHSAA's website.
  10. I was thinking J.C. Penney, but the following excerpt tells about the founding of many schools for African Americans during segregation: "Julius Rosenwald, a millionaire Jewish high-school dropout and Sears executive, teamed with Booker T. Washington in 1913 to promote philanthropy for education...." Crispus Attucks...the first American killed in the Revolutionary War... was of African-American descent. Frederick Douglass was a famed abolitionist...who later became one of the first blacks appointed to high federal office. (Just found out a new high school planned for Lexington in the next year or two will bear his name.) Lynch East Main was the white school; Lynch West Main was for blacks. Benham (white) and East Benham (black) both existed in that town. Providence and Providence Rosenwald were separate schools in the same Western Kentucky town in Webster County. Paris Western and Owensboro Western were, indeed, for African-American students. Class dismissed.
  11. Many of the mining champs in Eastern Kentucky were just large enough to have their own tiny school. Black Star was one of them.
  12. Living in a small town...and having our own team...WAS fun. I never wore a coat to school: it was only half-a-block from my house--just bolted out the front door and into the school building. And the people of the communities were much closer then.
  13. From Wikipedia: Hamilton is an unincorporated community in Boone County, Kentucky, United States. It is situated at Latitude 38.88333, Longitude -84.78167, in the southern part of the county on the Ohio River; it is about a mile north of the mouth of Big Bone Creek. It was established in 1835, being incorporated by the Kentucky Legislature as the Town of Landing.
  14. This is from the KHSAA publication "The Athlete." Game times and ticket prices are interesting.
  15. At the risk of breaking BGP rules: http://www.KentuckySportsHistory.com
  16. Thanks Jim. Fun to know that other folks enjoy that kind of stuff too.

  18. You guys are making me homesick. After 23 years at the mic in Madisonville, it has now been almost that long elsewhere...the last 16 here in Tennessee. 19. My research hasn't uncovered the "why" of Madisonville's Maroons. I always presumed it was just the color (of the Maroon and Black)...just like Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College, Mississippi State and Chicago State (an original member of the Big Ten)...all from back in the day.
  20. Jeff Bridgeman in "Kentucky High School Basketball Encyclopedia" says that Hellier was the orange and black. That old KHSAA directory also says orange and black.
  21. Disagree strongly. "Train up a child in the way he should go...." Young people don't have the perspective to understand a lot of what adults should teach them...whether it is in school or the workplace. But you teach them anyway, and someday most will understand. And appreciate. Especially when it comes to the military and our flag.
  22. I think every school/organization has a right to expect its students/employees to conform to certain standards...anything from wearing shoes and socks...to showing respect for the flag & anthem. And I wish more such groups would exercise that right. I'm with Jeff Fisher:
  23. Correction: Bobby Watson graduated from Owensboro in 1948...and did NOT play on the 1949 state championship team there. My apologies.
