  1. I like Joe Buck. Liked Ernie Johnson in the earlier rounds too, but he got called away by the NBA. Madison Bumgarner was Joe's man-crush in the 2014 World Series. (Though I'll admit to rooting for the Royals that year.)
  2. The KHSAA website lists Marshall County's gym capacity at 6,000. For those of you who have been there for the HoopFest, (about) how many people attend each of the sessions?
  3. Thanks for publicizing the link, Voice. Fun stuff!
  4. Never been to YUM nor BB&T. Agree, Rupp is bigger than necessary to hold the crowds (which are, indeed, dwindling.) But I still think Rupp is the mecca. Ya gotta have it there if possible. The way I remember it: when the Louisville schools were playing, their crowd would frequently be the smallest of the bunch...whether it was at Freedom Hall or Rupp. No doubt my memory isn't what it used to be...but I got to be part of broadcasting the entire Sweet 16 from 1974-1991. Looking back, it would have been fun to have a picture of each corner of the gym...at least for the first round games...to see how many folks each team brought.
  5. I don't always agree...but usually appreciate...Stuart Shepard's take on social issues. (3:15 in length) If Kneeling is Protected Speech, Then… | Stoplight - Family Policy Alliance
  6. With my son's encouragement, I froze mine with all three credit agencies...and opened an account with Zander Identity Theft Protection. The latter won't keep someone from stealing your info, but WILL provide someone to go to all the hassle of "rescuing" you if it should happen. Yes there is cost involved, but it's worth it to me because the possibilities otherwise are something I wouldn't want to face.
  7. Mac, is that a first for Logan County vs. Russellville?
  8. Shocked that they would remove an Asian-American man named Robert Lee from a football broadcast in Virginia...but then again, probably shouldn't be surprised at anything anymore. Robert Lee: ESPN under fire for taking announcer off UVA game - Aug. 23, 2
  9. Find it hard to believe I just now saw it for the first time. Going through a stack of monthly magazines called The Kentucky Explorer...which features a zillion historical stories of the Commonwealth...reading all of the sports related ones...and saving bits and pieces for my files. Our station carried U.K. sports the whole time I was there; we interviewed him at our state tournament broadcasts several times (picture from the 1989 Sweet Sixteen; ) etc. And I never remember seeing or even hearing his middle name.
  10. Shucks; knew the story at one time, but now don't even remember what book it was. There was more about the South Bend Central job and all that he learned there...about learning to deal with parents, society, school principals, etc. Dayton, KY probably wasn't a whole lot different from his home town of Martinsville, IN.
  11. Always have. Sensitive sinuses and the ability to get a tremendous cold once or twice (or more) a year. And the fibers from tissues always seemed to cause more problems than they helped. Still put a clean hanky in my hip pocket every day.
  12. No doubt there are several KHSAL guys who would be worthy of discussion. But accurate information about their careers and the competition is almost impossible to find. Bummer!
  13. That's what we used to call a "snack bar" where I come from. Any of you guys know if one this is different?
  14. Well phooey; that didn't come out as clearly as I had hoped. Not sure how to clean it up. The script at the bottom of first picture said, "Dedicatory exercises, honoring Mr. Bridges, were held in the Highlands H.S Gym January 15 (1956.) Bottom of the second pic, "The basement recreation room is used for student activities during the day and by the teen-age canteen and other groups on weekends and for special evening programs."
  15. Thought this might be of interest to Bluebirds fans. Found the pic in the February, 1956 edition of the KHSAA's publication "The Athlete."
  16. That's pretty special, Mustang; thanks for posting.
  17. I liked Lackey's comments after the game: "I wasn't trying to hit anybody, but I totally get the other side, too," Lackey said. "Tell Happy, my bad, apologize for that, have to buy him something nice for getting hit. But the game polices itself. Whether I intentionally did it or not, I get it on the other side. You've got to take care of your guys too." ("Happy" is rookie Ian Happ...the Cub who got plunked in retaliation in the bottom of the 5th.)
  18. I appreciate the following quote from Pastor Rick Warren: “Our culture has accepted two huge lies. The first is that if you disagree with someone’s lifestyle, you must fear or hate them. The second is that to love someone means you agree with everything they believe or do. Both are nonsense. You don’t have to compromise convictions to be compassionate.”
  19. We always enjoyed sitting near Dale and Hardy Tribble at the Sweet 16. Always in a good mood; always glad to see ya; always enjoying the proceedings; and funny as all get out. God bless you my friend; thanks for great memories.
  20. Julian Tackett posted this on Facebook this evening: Sitting in a restaurant by myself tonight, was thinking the poetry I heard most of the day listening to xm radio and the British announcers who have you thinking you are there on xm radio listening to the Open. The poetic waxing was wonderful. Then I came across a post that literally shook me, actually bring tears I didnt care who saw to my eyes. Longtime radio man, coach and true friend Dale McMillen, according to his family, is in his final countdown tonight. He has fought illness gallantly but likely will lose that battle, yet head to a much more glorious place in a short while. Dale was one of the first to reach out to me as a wet behind the ears SID at the KHSAA in 1984, and truthful was a friend to me the years before that when I worked on the sweet 16 and U.K. Stats crews. He offered suggestions, advice, wisdom and counsel. And during the nearly 20 years I tried to make mike Michael Beitzel, Ken Shields, Rick Meyers and others evenings miserable at the old gym at NKU, I would always run into him a couple of times a year and get an update. Later we became even closer as he coached the Lloyd slow pitch softball team during the years that our staff pitched in and ran the tournament in its last year's so those girls would have a participation opportunity. Good night old friend, your work here was good and is done now. See you on the other side. Have the scorebook ready.
  21. You might contact Kevin Patton. He has been the sports editor of the Henderson Gleaner for the last 20 years or so. The play-by-play man was Keith Farrell on WHRZ, Providence. He is now the public address voice for the Trojans teams. Jim Pickens has been writing sports for the Owensboro Inquirer dating back 30 years or so. He would likely be able to add information...at least regarding the game with Owensboro Catholic. Scott Brown still does Trigg County play-by-play for WKDZ, and has a treasure trove of information regarding Western Kentucky sports.
  22. Anyone have any corrections for the list below?
