  1. Our pastor wrapped up a series of sermons about heaven today. He started by saying, "God forgive you if you think, in any way, heaven could be boring. Heaven is going to be a blast!" The best friends, the best music, the best accommodations, the best games, etc. I hadn't thought about games being there, but there are many allusions in the New Testament to athletic contests. Looking forward to it all!
  2. I won't root against the kid. We don't "pick" who our father will be. I do find it hard to cheer for daddy, though.
  3. That's one of the "unintended consequences" of consolidation: more opportunities for kids in some ways (though not sports.) But when you lose "community" for your school, you lose a lot. I say sports. As SmallHoops pointed out above: with 7 high schools you have 35 starters in basketball and (if there are 15 varsity roster players each) a total of 105 on the basketball teams. With just Muhlenberg Central, you're down to 5 starters and a total of 15 varsity players. Instead of your school (& churches) being the center of community life in 7 towns, 6 of the 7 communities have lost a huge focal point. Rivalries that continually build interest no longer exist. No way the folks in Greenville and Central City can replace the rivalry between their two teams...with a Muhlenberg Central rivalry with ___ (you fill in the blank.)
  4. This would make the first time the region tournament will have been in Henderson since 1968...when the Henderson City "Flash" was host. ("City" and "County" consolidated in 1976-77.) Henderson County has hosted a region tournament only once since its inception in 1954-55. That was in 1963 when the Colonels were in the 3rd region. They lost a first-round game to Henderson Douglass (the all-black school) in the first round that year. That was in the days when teams were not seeded for the region, and you could play a district foe at any time...depending on the draw. Indeed, perhaps a change of scenery will be good luck for the Colonels. They've not had much of that in tournament play.
  5. As a small town guy, I always enjoyed a smaller church. We are in a larger church now and enjoy that very much as well. As long as the main thing remains the main thing, God will bless.
  6. Hard to believe, but it has been 16 straight years for District 8 to produce the 2nd Region champion. 7 times - Christian County 6 times - Hopkinsville 3 times- University Heights Last "outsider" to win was Madisonville in 2001. Henderson County last won in 1999.
  7. When someone was complaining about a relatively mundane thing: "A hundred years from now it won't make any difference."
  8. Just Googled that title and could not find anything even remotely related to Fox. The only articles that show that particular term...refer to the President using it to describe his own situation so far. Fake news?
  9. Enes Kanter of Oklahoma City Thunder in London after being detained in Romania
  10. Hadn't heard that name, and looked up Jason's story in the C-J to get the scoop. Blake Stone is a 2001 graduate of Henderson County and has been an assistant with the Colonels for the past 10 years. Interesting hire.
  11. How cool is that? Anything patriotic gets me going.
  12. Here is a link to the all-time Indiana teams, but I have never been able to find one listing all of the Kentucky All-Stars. I believe I saw a program (perhaps from the 1970's) that listed all of them, but don't have that now. IBCA/IndyStar.com: Annual Indiana versus Kentucky All-Star Games - Indiana Basketball Coaches Association | IBCA
  13. I am fascinated with you guys' stats. I have always enjoyed numbers like that, but you all are diggers!
  14. Looking back, I agree: the ethics question would have been better to have its own thread. My question wasn't aimed at the politicians, but to the respondents early in this thread...who "laughingly" said they would be happy to believe one thing but say something entirely different for enough money. Again, should have been another thread. Mea culpa.
  15. Does ethics not mean anything to anyone anymore? I remember hearing it said, "If a man's word is worth nothing, he is nothing." Would any of you guys say what you mean...and stand for it...even if it cost you a big promotion or even your job?
  16. It seems to me the basis of the conversation/complaint/head scratching is: When President Obama was in office, he publicly sided with those who were in the streets protesting (in general) the top one percent of the population in wealth and (specifically) those associated with Wall Street. All the while, the President himself was part of that top one percent. I call that inexplicable irony. Now Mr. Obama reportedly will get nearly half-a-million dollars for a speech to these same (evil) Wall Streeters. I call that hypocrisy.
  17. I would be there if I could...though you guys might not enjoy my company.
  18. You are right: didn't do one last year. And nothing so far this time.
  19. One of the team officials gave Len & J.D. (the TV announcers) their rings during the game last night. Len is always pretty calm...never gets too excited...but admitted (and you could see) that his hand was shaking when he put it on. Pretty cool.
  20. Any of you guys ever seen a pitch stick to the catcher's chest protector before? Opened the door to the Cubs' 4-run 7th. Ball sticks in chest protector of St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina
  21. I don't have Mr. Higgins complete track record, but he had a 69-26 won/loss record as head coach at Trigg County from 1999 through 2006. Sounds like an excellent addition to Craig's staff. 'Twould be fun to talk to Higgins after the season and ask him to talk about his feelings of leaving the principalship and returning to coaching...at the same school.
  22. Not that it makes a hill of beans worth of difference, but the writer didn't include the 1997 figures in his story correctly...because of the Artose Pinner deal. From a media perspective, some coaches are great to work with--some are a bit more difficult. For the record, I always enjoyed interaction with Craig Clayton. He was my favorite for the Madisonville head coaching job in 1984 when Steve Tweddell left. He was passed up; took the head job at Todd County Central; went 8-3 and 9-3 and won the district each year; then went to Hoptown.
