3 Team Districts

Featured Replies

I was never aware until tonight that both the 4th District in Region 1, and the 6th District in Region 2 have only 3 teams in their districts, automatically placing 1 team in those districts in the district championship game with an automatic bid to appear in the 1st or 2nd Region Tournaments.

District 4 -

Calloway County - automatic bid

Murray

Marshall County

District 6 -

Henderson County - automatic bid

Union County

Webster County

Are there any other districts throughout the state of Kentucky that also have only 3 teams?

If so, which districts are they, and what teams are in them?

3rd in the 1st

Graves County- Automatic Bid

Ballard Memorial

Mayfield

10th in the 3rd

Muhlenberg County - Automatic Bid

McLean County

Ohio County

48th in the 12th region

Wayne County - Automatic Bid

Southwestern

McCreary Central

Thanks for the info BnG...and so quickly at that. :thumb:

This is all very interesting, especially since I was never aware of it before.

Where the heck have I been? :idunno:

They should not exist. And thats all I got to say about that.

The 48th District could be fixed easily. Move Russell County back or Clinton County over and no problems at all.

As for the western Kentucky districts, consolidation really limited realignments. With the opening of McCracken County, the combining of Muhlenberg North and South, and even the closing of a school like Providence several years ago, there just aren't many schools to move. Todd County Central could move to the 2nd, maybe Russellville and Logan County could move, but otherwise there aren't enough schools to fit geographically (and the KHSAA isn't moving the Hardin County schools out of the 5th). A little off the topic, but in PurplePride92's last appearance on the CN2 High School Sports show he said that there are still 4 districts out of 64 that continue to use the blind draw to decide the pairings for their district tournaments. Does anyone know who those 4 districts are?

I think there are more than 4. Off the top of my head: 38,39,44,54,55

District Seeding Plans

I looked through them all last month and I found four, your list minus the 54th.

You are correct. I just have look at the wrong one. Sorry about that.

It's all good, I do find it odd that the boys and girls are different??

Consolidation has caused a lot of this. Will be interesting to see what redistricting will bring.

I know geography can make realignment difficult, but I'm of the belief that as long as there are at least 256 schools, then there should never be 3-team districts. And right now there are roughly 275 basketball playing schools in Kentucky.

When is re-districting to occur? You keep hearing that it will but it yet to do so. Won't happen next year as scheduling I am sure has already began to take place.

I don't think there are any plans for realignment. When McCracken County opened two years ago the KHSAA moved around some teams in the 1st Region. Louisville/Jefferson County had a sizable overhaul 5-6 years ago, too. But I don't think there is any realignment on the horizon for basketball. The last major shift came in 2006.
