3 Team Districts

I looked at KHSAA. It's been a few years since we've had any serious redistricting occur. gchs, I agree with you 100%. Geography may make it difficult, but there is no reason for there to be 3 team districts.

Basketball realignment is pretty rare, though. It happened in 2006, but before that the last large realignment had been in 1982~ and before that back in 1966 when Jefferson County was changed from one region to two. It is a pretty rare thing.

I know geography can make realignment difficult, but I'm of the belief that as long as there are at least 256 schools, then there should never be 3-team districts. And right now there are roughly 275 basketball playing schools in Kentucky.

If it was possible to do a "super like" of a post, this one would warrant it. Given the number of 5 team districts in the state, there is no excuse for a 3 team district. None. If you have to realign every year due to consolidation, etc., so be it.

Why? It's not like it's even hard. Heck football realignment happens every four years and extremely complicated. The same could be done with basketball considering all the consolidations. I thought there were relatively few 3-team districts but was I wrong.

All the freedom basketball gets is amazing. District seeding method is chosen woukd drive me crazy.

I could've swore there we two districts that combined their tournaments a few years ago.

The 48th District could be fixed easily. Move Russell County back or Clinton County over and no problems at all.

As for the western Kentucky districts, consolidation really limited realignments. With the opening of McCracken County, the combining of Muhlenberg North and South, and even the closing of a school like Providence several years ago, there just aren't many schools to move. Todd County Central could move to the 2nd, maybe Russellville and Logan County could move, but otherwise there aren't enough schools to fit geographically (and the KHSAA isn't moving the Hardin County schools out of the 5th). It's

48th could also be fixed by moving Somerset to 48th, Lincoln then moves to 47th leaving Garrard, Boyle, Danville and KSD as a 4 team Dist and no one changes regions. Also just 2 teams have to move. If Clinton or Russell is moved from 16th then a team from 15th has to move as well as a team from the five team 14th Dist.

Right you are. From the website:

2009 (Talk about an interesting scenario)

There were 15 teams in the 15th region...all lumped into Districts 57-59.

It was decided that the semi-final losers in Districts 57 and 59 would play for the final two spots in the region.

Not sure how they chose those teams, the sequence of games, nor which would advance, but here's what happened:

Feb. 27 at Sheldon Clark Sheldon Clark 67, Magoffin County 60

Feb. 27 at Sheldon Clark Phelps 77, Pike County Central 68

(Pike Central lost…but advanced to play the next night along with Sheldon Clark)

Feb. 28 at Pike Central Pike County Central 90, Sheldon Clark 82

(then… Phelps & Pike Central were selected to go to the region)

From an outsider's perspective it appears Bugs Bunny was right, "Thew's something scwewy going on awound hew."

The only problem with this plan is the KHSAA has made moves to try and make basketball, baseball, volleyball, soccer, etc. districts the same. By moving Lincoln out of the 45th, you'd have a four-team district for basketball, but for all of the other sports it would be a three-team district, bringing up the same problems we're trying to avoid.

The KHSAA said during the last realignment that three-team districts would be eliminated. Now, they seem to have decided they aren't a big deal.

I agree with some others though, it's not fair and could be fixed.

Every region should have at least 16 teams, and there are enough teams in the state to have an average of 17 per region.

The total number of schools would suggest that there are enough for each region to have at least an average of 17 teams per region, however I'm guessing that various population demographics throughout the state is what makes it more complex to accomplish than it looks on paper.

Proximity to other schools within a particular district has to be taken into consideration in order to prevent some schools from having to travel ridiculously far just to play other schools within their own district and/or region.

Sure, some teams schedule a lot of travel games, but in general it is desired that schools be relatively close to other teams within their own district and region.

I'm guessing that as it presently is, there are still some schools that are already living the predicament of traveling far just to play teams in their own region which really doesn't seem fair while lots of other teams have the luxury of playing lots of their away games still very close to home.

One example would be that Montgomery County in Region 10 is an hour and 45 minute drive from Campbell Co High School who is also in the 10th Region.

Populated areas like Louisville, Lexington, and, NKY have no problem finding enough teams to meet the desired number schools needed have at least 16+ teams per region, and Louisville even has so many that they must designate two regions (6th & 7th) to support all the schools in that area.

On the other hand Regions 1,2, & 3 simply don't have enough schools in their area to reach the desired number.

gchs_uk9 suggested as easy fix for district 48 in Region 12, but trying to fix Regions 1, 2, & 3, there really aren't many, if any, options.

Region 4 has 17 teams, and Region 5 has 18, so I suppose that it's entirely possible that they could take the 3 teams of those 2 regions who are the most furthest west in their region and drop them in the 3rd Region, then bump a couple of furthest western teams in the 3rd to the 2nd, and then bump a couple of the furthest western teams from the 2nd Region over to the 1st Region.

Not being from that area I wouldn't know exactly which teams would make the most sense for all this bumping that I am suggesting.

It's obviously already pretty much stretched to the limit as it is, and that's about the only thing that I can imagine that could be done to remedy the problem, or else we just accept that Regions 1, 2, and 3 are just going to be this way, and at the end of the day only one team from each region can make it to the Sweet 16, and finding a team to fill those shoes has never been a problem.

Here is an outdated map of the Regional layout, but just something to help give a visual of how generally things are laid out.

I wonder if a more current one is available?

If someone has one it would be much appreciated if you were to post it.

There are actually two teams from Kenton County and three from Campbell County in the tenth region.

In response to b-ball, to me, it comes down to a simple proposition. Fairness trumps convenience.

I agree that fairness should be the desired goal. The puzzle is finding the perfect solution to make everything fair.

Without knowing the southwest part of the state and its schools very well, I don't even know if what I suggested would work. It was just taking a stab at what sounded to be logical, but I have no idea if it's logistically possible.

I'd be interested in hearing from people from Regions 1 thru 5 to see if they think that any shifting could happen to ensure that all 20 districts in that area have at least 4 teams per district.
