GRChoops, do you know of a list of all time records for Winchester and/or Clark County basketball that would include 1.) season record and 2.) coach's name for each year? I wrote to the newspaper there some time ago and didn't get a response.

Hey JW, we have corresponded. The mention of Louis Stout brought back some memories. Was a member of the all state tournament team in 1958 from Cynthiana High School. He was a commissioner of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association; and in 2006, he wrote a book called "Shadows of the Past"...about the old KHSAL (Kentucky High School Athletic League) and its teams from 1932-1957. That, and perhaps other of his writings, would be at the Eastern Kentucky University library in a special section regarding the old black high schools, their teams and coaches. KHSAA State tournament selections from all black schools included: Julius Berry of Lexington Dunbar in '58 and '59 Tom Thacker, Covington Grant, 1959 Walter Gee, Hopkinsville Attucks, 1960 Henry Davis & Austin Dumas, Lexington Dunbar 1961 James Smith & George Wilson, Lexington Dunbar 1963 Dwight Smith, Princeton Dotson, 1963 George Wilson, Dunbar, again in 1964 George Stone, Covington Grant, 1964 James Bryant, Louisville Central, 1965 Robert Washington, Lexington Dunbar, 1965 I'm not sure this is an exhaustive list, but it's the best I could cull from my files.

Hopkins County Central lost to Ballard Memorial 72-69 last night in a tournament at Edmonson County.

Was there when Richie Farmer & Clay County beat Ballard in overtime for the state title in 1987. Back the next year when Richie got his 51 against Ballard, but with the Bruins winning the rematch. Listening back to the broadcast, forgot the final basket (his 9th 3-pointer of the game) was a goal tend call. And the announcer said his foot was actually on the line for two. Dang; Ballard should have held him to "just" 50. Of course, they won...so I'm sure they didn't care about the rest. Also saw Manual Forrest's 47 vs. eventual champion Simon Kenton in 1981.

Thanks for your comments here, Jason Frakes. Helps to get info from the horse's mouth. Yes, the system isn't perfect, but I agree it's the best all-state team available. To me, it's similar to the Lit-Ratings in that regard: not perfect, but the best possible scenario. I worked with coaches who submitted all-state teams and some who didn't. Each had his own reason for doing so...or not.

Surprised no one mentioned 1961 Mr. Basketball Randy Embry from Owensboro for the "All 3rd" team. But there are an awful lots of guys to choose from there.

This website might be as close as you can come...and it would still take a little digging. Though terribly out-manned almost every time on the court, they were ably coached for almost 30 years by John D. Wilson. There have been rumors almost every year for the last few that the school would have to close...or perhaps give up their basketball program. With a new coach each of the last two years, they might be considering that yet again. Trivia question: how many Red Bird players can you name? (Wish I had my paperwork with me to be positive, but....) I'll start with Woody Asher...who transferred to Clay County. If I'm not mistaken, he was the 6'6 center on the 1985 state runner-up.

Looks like it. In fact, he's the only JeffCo player in the Top 25 or so (3,000 point scorers.) As a Senior, he put Moore's Mustangs on his back and carried them to the Final Four in 1981...where they lost by one point to eventual champion Simon Kenton.

From the Courier-Journal back in April: "A varsity player since seventh grade and one of the state's premier shooters, Brandon Hatton averaged 21.9 points this season and right around that for the past four years. The Mr. Basketball finalist's 3,045 career points are No. 26 in state history, and he missed only one game (with a sprained ankle last season) in Dixie's 184 varsity contests since his seventh-grade year. Hatton made the All-State second team in 2011, '12 and '13."
