Southwestern vs. Pulaski County Predictions/Updates
Reservations For Two To Settle District Championship And Bragging Rights

Records: Southwestern (8-0) | Pulaski County (8-1)

BGP Ranking: Southwestern (#7 in 5A) | Pulaski County (#8 in 5A)

Series History: Southwestern leads 19-17

Table Setter: As the leaves turn and the autumn chill fills the air, football in Pulaski County goes against the grain.... It begins to boil over. When the Warriors and Maroons get together, they have a tendency to generate heat no matter what the thermometer says. This year's encounter is shaping up to be one of the more hotly anticipated in the series' intense and highly competitive history.

Southwestern has controlled the last three meetings, winning each by at least three scores. On paper, it's hard to see how either side pulls away this week. The Warriors are unblemished, with Pulaski County just a three point loss to Corbin away from joining them in the ranks of the unbeaten. The Maroons were nearly dealt a second defeat last week, but dodged a bullet on Log Mountain, thanks, in large part to the growing legend of Chandler Godby. He's become impossible to ignore when looking ahead to post-season awards and accolades. Southwestern did as good a job as anyone last year of keeping Godby in chains, unable to make the plays we've seen him make this year.

There have been two constants for the Warriors every week: They run the football (nearly 300 ypg) and play great defense (11 ppg allowed), two elements conducive to success this time of year.

There's a great deal on the line aside from a district crown. Both have designs on deep playoff runs, but the loser is likely staring at a second round trip to Versailles.

The natives are sure to make the 'Reservation' an unwelcome environment for the invading Maroons, setting one of the best scenes around the state this week. These two are always building toward this game. The wait is over.

Tracking The Unbeatens
We've still got eleven teams that haven't tasted defeat, with CAL being the most likely to keep their "0" intact through season's end. Frederick Douglass is our 5A favorite, but they can't and shouldn't overlook Boyle County next week.

3A - CAL, Bardstown, Union County, and Mason County

Ryle vs. Simon Kenton Predictions/Updates (10/22)
The big 6A district game we all been waiting for in Northern Kentucky. Should be a great game. Who do you think wins and why?

Big stakes in this game as the winner gets in the Trinity bracket for playoffs and loser gets Ballard bracket. Pick your poison but I think I would rather face Ballard than Trinity. I'll take Simon Kenton since they are playing well right now. Should be competitive game.

This is the Star 64 game of the week on TV Saturday at 5pm.

Close game as long as Kaden Gardner is 100%. Don’t see a blowout here at all if KG plays. Turnovers will be a key when evenly matched teams hook up. Great late afternoon/evening for fall football.

Calpreps has it SK 35-31.

Highlands 32 Covington Catholic 21
Congratulations to the Bluebirds. Highlands was clearly the better team tonight, start to finish.

Congrats Highlands. You proved a lot of doubters wrong.

The cake has risen!

I didn’t realize it had been so long since Highlands had beaten CCH. Big win for the Birds!

Charlie Noon, really good player. Very dynamic with the ball in his hands.

All smiles here.

It was a nightmare start for the Birds, and they still managed to win. That says something about both teams, IMO.

Paducah Tilghman at Union County Predictions/Updates
Paducah Tilghman (3-4) at Union County (7-0)

The big district showdown is here! This is the one that both teams have looked ahead to for quite some time whether they will admit it or not.

Union County will bring a high powered offense into this one, averaging 39.57 points per game. Their defense allows 12.71 p.p.g. Cannon Sheffer is a terrific qb for Union and can make all the throws, but the biggest majority of their offense is on the ground. They punish teams with 5 or 6 guys getting carries during a game. Kristopher Hughes is their top receiver and runner both and has 14 combined touchdowns on the season. Union averages 273.9 rushing yards per game.

Tilghman is coming off a game that in most instances they would have taken a moral victory from, only losing by 4 points to Henry County (TN) on the road. However, the puzzling play calling and multiple unforced mistakes led to a lot of PT fans being upset, knowing they are better than what was shown. PT has struggled on offense through the air all season as Jack James has yet to find a consistent rhythm at quarterback. Jordauyn White is key for the Tornado, not only in this game, but going forward as Malachi Rider eventually comes back. Jordauyn has 277 yards on only 29 carries since Rider's injury and is averaging 9.55 y.p.c. He has added 75 reception yards during those games as well. It's imperative for Tilghman to make him a focal point of this game. He has to get the ball.

Union County has won 3 of the last 4 games in this series. Tilghman's only win was the come from behind victory in the playoffs last season, a game they were down big in before Cam Marshall came to the rescue. This game will be a good barometer of where these two truly stand in 3A at the moment.

Highlands at Covington Catholic Predictions/Updates ***Upset Alert***
If you're part of the Highlands or Cov Cath communities and this week doesn't have your blood pumping, then I don't know if you can call yourself any kind of a football fan.

Highlands is toting a 6-game win streak and an overall record of 6-2 at this point of the season. Brody Benke is really settling in at QB with nearly 1500 yards passing in 8 games. Charlie Noon is becoming the straw that stirs the drink for the Birds offense, with over 500 yards receiving and 200 yards rushing.

Cov Cath holds a 6-1 record, coming in off of their bye week. They haven't lost a game since their Week 1 loss to Elder (OH), but the Colonels are looking a little more banged up than they did in Week 1, with starters TE/LB Willie Rodriguez, WR/DB Michael Cody, and OL/DL Seth Jones all among the eight players who arrived in civies for Sep 30th game against Boone County. Injuries have definitely hampered the Colonels in recent weeks. Cov Cath's quarterbacks have combined for just over 1000 yards passing in 7 games, and led by Owen Leen with his 686 yards rushing for 8 TDs, the Colonels have rushed for almost 1300 yards.

Coach Sphire and the Birds will be looking to snap a 9-game Cov Cath win streak in the series that dates back to 2016, while Coach Eviston and the Colonels are trying to keep their team rolling and chalk up another win over the Birds.

Who 'ya got in this one??

Saint Xavier vs. Manual Predictions/Updates
Saint Xavier (5-1) hosts Manual (6-0) after defeating Ryle 37-0. Manual is coming off an open week.

The St. X defense dominated Ryle forcing 4 turnovers and holding them to 30 yards of offense. The offense was led by QB Adam Boone who rushed for two touchdowns. LB Jaxon Panariello led the defense with 5 tackles including 1 for a loss and a sack. 3 Tigers had interceptions and now are 2nd in 6A in that category behind Daviess County.

Manual statistically leads 6A in defense allowing a stingy 6.8 points per game and in their last game blanked Ballard 21-0.

Common opponent:

St. X 44 Central 8

Manual 40 Central 12

Last year, St. X beat Manual 42-10 but was much closer in the playoffs with St. X winning by getting a late 4th quarter safety to win 18-16.

This game has big things on the line with Manual #1 in RPI and St. X #2. It's also a district matchup with the winner in the driver seat. This looks like a close game between two dominating defenses . Manual last won in 2019 and before that was 1993. Does Manual get the win or does St. X continue to dominate the modern series?

Boyle County vs. Lexington Catholic Predictions/Updates ***Upset Alert***
Yay!  It’s finally Catholic week!!!

In what has become one of the biggest rivalries in the state, Boyle County travels to Lexington Catholic for what usually is an all out brawl for the district regular season championship.  Both teams are having a great season with the Rebels starting 6 - 0 with big wins over Bowling Green, Henderson County, Bryan Station and North Hardin.   The Knights bring a 5 - 1 record into the contest with a one point loss to Covington Catholic and wins over Ryle, Henry Clay, PRP, LCA and Tates Creek.  Both teams are coming off a bye week and should be rested and refreshed.

Boyle leads the all-time series 21- 13 and has won the last nine games dating back to 2017 (5 reg season and 4 playoff games).  In that stretch only two games have been close.  It truly has been a series of streaks, with Catholic winning the previous 8 of 9 before the current streak.  The series dates back to 1997 where Boyle won 28 - 27.  All the games but one have involved playoff implications with 19 being district games and 14 being in the playoffs.  In most years the met in the regular season and the playoffs, as this was before RPI seeding.  Should be another good one.

WHO YOU WITH ?!?!?!?!

BluegrassPreps.com Mr. Football Watchlist (9/27)
A slow start to the season is fading rapidly into Blake Birchfield's rearview mirror. Hidden inside Pikeville's demonstrative dismantling of Lexington Christian Academy was Week 6's most bombastic individual declaration.

No matter where it happens, it's always noteworthy when a school record falls. At Pikeville, the unofficial RB High in eastern Kentucky, a new rushing standard carries a little more weight than most. No one in the rich history of that program has ever run for more yards than Birchfield did against LCA last week. Not the immortal duo of Greg Hackney and Bobby Deramus. Not Daric Pugh, who bulldozed a path for Pikeville to the 2015 1A title. All-time rushing leader Brent Coleman ran for 6,700 yards in maroon, but never for more yards in a single game than Birchfield. He bested last year's performance against the Eagles by nearly a hundred yards. All told, he punished LCA for 350 yards and six touchdowns, giving him over 600 yards in two games against one of the top small school programs in the state.

It was a devastating display of power and speed. He consistently battered LCA for 7-10 yards with a few huge gainers sprinkled in. He ran over tacklers, drug defenders, and sprinted away from fleet footed pursuers. It might be the most commanding performance by a running back this season and instantly reinstates him as one of the top contenders to follow from here on. And presented as evidence that he's not just an offensive force, he picked off his first pass of the season. Hail Birchfield!
