An 18-year-old Oklahoma mother fearing for her infant's life shot and killed an intruder after a 911 operator told her, "Do what you have to do to protect your baby."

Sarah McKinley was home with her 3-month-old son on New Year's Eve in Blanchard, Okla., when Justin Martin, 24, broke in with a large hunting knife, NBC affiliate KFOR-TV reported.

I'm glad for her sake that she doesn't live in New York, or Chicago, or D.C., or some other liberal bastion.

Obama voted AGAINST legislation giving gun owners an affirmative defense when they use firearms to defend themselves and their families against home invaders and burglars. I hope he doesn't try this as one of his "under the radar" tactics of gun control nation wide..

What is am affirmative defense? Is that similar to Stand Your Ground home defense laws versus laws saying you must flee your home in the case of a break in.

Hate that a man lost his life, but this woman did the right thing IMO. It's been a terrible holiday season for her, having lost her husband on Christmas & now this on New Year's.

An "affirmative defense" is an assertion saying that the even if the facts as the other party presents them are true, the defendant is still not culpable. Self-defense is the basic example of an affirmative defense. "Sure, I hit him, but he was going to stab me." Therefore, not guilty of assault.

I don't know exactly what Obama voted against but you can't give any one or any group an affirmative defense when they take a life. Every case needs to be based on the individual circumstances.

Exactly. A federal law of that magnitude is inviting unnecessary violence. These types of cases have different circumstances.

In any and every case where an intruder is threatening you and your family, I believe you have every right to defend your home, no questions asked.

If someone is in your home uninvited with a weapon it is a no brainer to stop them with deadly force.

If the law treated prosecution and defense equally, then I would agree with this, but it doesn't. The penal code is replete with examples of "presumptions" that people/persons committed crimes, and therefore I see no harm in a presumption that if a person invades your home, he is there to harm you and you may kill him. If we truly want a case-by-case analysis, then eliminate the presumptions that favor police and prosecutors.

If a stranger enters my home without my permission, I'm shooting first, asking questions later.

Good for this young lady. Heck of a month.

Enough said! 100% agree!
