Idk but id love to see the Reds get Pierre to platoon...He isn't great but he is exciting at the top if the lineup and it wouldn't take much to get him...

Alonso will be great for the Padres...The kid is way better than you give him credit for and is determined to get better...I say he hits. 300, 20 dingers and 100 rbis...All in all good trade though...Alonso was the best OF option for the Reds but maybe Fransisco can play out there or Sappelt and Heiser...

 

That park had only 3 every day players hit above. 300 in the last 6 seasons. Adrian Gonzalez did it once. Alonso is no Adrian Gonzalez.

They won't go into 2013 with him if they can't resign him. They won't pay him $19m for 1 year.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the Reds go for Kubel, or Ludwick in free agency sometime real soon.

Sure they gave up a ton of potential but they receive a proven commodity on the MLB level and the time is now. Jocketty knows that the window could be small with Votto likely leaving in less than two years and Phillips with no long term deal. Why not strike now with the Cards and Brewers in limbo?

In his minor league career, Alonso has averaged .293 and 15 HR and 75 RBI per 500 at-bats ... and you think he's going .300-20-100 in Petco?

He was in 2010, but Arroyo had before that established a history of being on-again, off-again.

 

Latos has put together two solid seasons in his first two years in the major leagues and simply has better stuff. The numbers bear that out, and you can tell that just from watching him.

 

The two cases aren't remotely comparable.

They're trying to win right now, I like it. The division is theirs to lose if Braun is out 50 games and Fielder stays out of the division.

One concern I have with Latos is that he faced for the most part, weak hitting teams in pitcher friendly parks in the NL West.

 

With that said this gives the Reds a solid 1-2 combo in the rotation.

 

They dealt young players but were players of depth they have.

 

You have to make a move now based on the situation in the division.

 

Count me in as really liking Juan Pierre. Solid vet who can hit leadoff and play solid defense.

^ A huge...HUGE factor in Latos versus Shields or some other top starter - money. Latos is probably going to make around $500K this year. Think about that. A proven #1 or 2 starter for $500K. Is there any other starter in baseball you can say that about? Jurrjens is the closest but he is coming off arm trouble and I believe he is 2 years past Latos in experience and arbitration eligibility. Getting Latos with two dominating years of big league experience at age 24 and under control for the next 4 years ... that is an amazing get by Jocketty. Any time you invest so much in one player, there is a risk because if that player gets hurt you lose a lot. But with the Reds being so close to being a true World Series contender, this move makes sense for now. And with Latos being so young it makes sense for the next 3-4 years as well.

Shields is worth less in the market than Latos IMO so you would think the reds could have gotten him for less. Good question though. How much less for Shields? If the Reds could get Shields for Alonso and Volquez ... is that a better deal? I still take the Latos deal.
