Reds deal Alonso, Grandal, Volquez and Boxberger for Matt Latos

Featured Replies

They signed Votto long term and got a really good pitcher that might be great so Alonso had no shot here. The catcher they got rid of is suspended for 50 games and Hannigan proved his worth was more than some people thought. They have every key person from a 90+ win team back except for Rolen (he might come back) and Stubbs who they upgraded. They have every key part signed for at least two seasons except their center fielder and by far their best prospect plays that position and should be ready by next spring. The reliever they gave up may be good some day but so may Hoover or any other guy that the Reds have. What isn't to absolutely love about the deal 1 year later?

Grandal and Boxberger both named to the All-Star team. This doesn't change anything about how I feel about the trade, still think the Reds made the right move in trading for Latos which has now became Desclafani and Wallach. I'm actually happy to see Grandal and Boxberger have success, I always was intrigued by the switch hitting abilities at Catcher for Grandal and it's good to see him putting it together. I don't think this will be his last All-Star appearance.

I said it then and I'll say it again. I thought they gave up too much for 1 pitcher. They gave up (4) 1st round draft picks for Latos and the ones I hated to lose were Grandal and Boxberger and I think they are both proving to be what I thought they could be. Like nkufan23 said switch hitting catchers intrigue me as well because they don't come along very often. The Reds thought Boxberger could be a closer and he has proven that.

couple thoughts:

Grandal would be blocked by Meso. A year ago Meso, was the man.

Boxberger would be blocked by Chapman. He keeps going to all-star games.

One of each had to be traded.

I'd have enjoyed watching Alonso move to left, though it may have been a disaster. Again, he had to be moved, or the above.

Not like they gave up players in places the cupboard was bare. I can live with what they gave up, if you believe in what they have in those places.

Never a Latos fan. Posted it on here. Zero to do with off-field stuff. Never liked him as a pitcher for very long.

Bad trade for the Reds only because of what they got in return. Should have done a better job choosing who they wanted

^ They got some pretty good time out of Latos and in return for him got a nice young SP under team control for a while. They needed a SP to make a playoff run and Latos gave them that at the time.

Didn't Grandal make it to the majors before Meso? However Meso didn't start out to hot in the majors, so its not like Meso would have had solid footing on the job. So I'm not so sure Meso would have blocked him because he has only had one good year himself.

Agreed!

I thought Meso would have moved to LF to straighten out that mess and Grandal would have been the regular catcher.
