Latos? Pretty good deal if you ask me.

If it's a one-for-one deal, it's a pretty good return for Alonso. Those criticizing Jocketty for not making moves should appreciate his patience.

 

Latos benefitted from Petco Park, like all pitchers, but his career numbers away from the cavernous ballpark are pretty solid:

 

Home ... 185 IP, 158 H, 12-13 record, 3.11 ERA, 56 BB, 179 SO

 

Road ... 244 IP, 203 H, 15-16 record, 3.57 ERA, 79 BB, 234 SO

 

Again, if it's simply Alonso-for-Latos, I suspect the Padres will eventually regret it.

They gave up a heck of a lot to get him but they have him under team co trol for 4 years. Cueto and Latos is a pretty nice 1-2.

Alonso should be very successful playing for the Padres with their big gaps to hit into. I suspect he'll hit a lot of doubles. The only person I really hate to see go in the trade is Boxberger. I was hoping he could become the closer in the next year or so. It also wouldn't surprise me to see Volquez return to his 2009 form given the Reds history, and how pitchers fare after they leave the Reds. Still very excited about having Latos in the rotation.

Volquez is probably thrilled he gets to pitch in SD.

It takes a heck of a hitter to be effective in Petco. Alonso doesn't strike me as that type of guy. A player with his defensive limitations needs to be a power hitter to really make an impact, and he doesn't appear to have that kind of ability.
