I don't know much about the minor leaguers, but I'm skeptical about Alonso being at best a poor man's Sean Casey, but with his fielding perhaps a PH role is the long-term outlook. Volquez is the wild card. I have a feeling he'll resurrect his career in SD. I think, given the nature of the Reds in the short-term interest of making title runs while they still have Votto, Phillips and Bruce under contract, this is a good move.

How about this: the last 7 seasons exactly 3 regular players for San Diego have finished the season with an average over .300 while playing their home games in Petco Park. They were Brian Giles who hit .301 in 2005 and .306 in 2008 and Adrian Gonzalez who hit .304 in 2006. What makes you think Alonso would hit .330 there? That park just destroys hitting--not just power numbers.

 

 

I honestly didn't know the numbers at PETCO. I just assumed his numbers would go up hitting in a ballpark with such a big outfield given he is a line drive hitter.

Just read some Padres fans' reactions and it seems they feel they sold too low on Latos or aren't too keen on Alonso.

Too small of a sample size to really be useful. However, his overall numbers look really promising. His K/BB ratio is very good and his WHIP is good for a starter. I think this was a pretty good deal for both teams.

I think his shot comes as the closer personally unless 2 starters are traded. They don't need him to start and they need a closer. They just traded their future closer.
