I have to agree with the Math Man on this one.

 

Frank Selvey - turned down Rupp and went on to play 10+ years in the nba.

Jerry Bird - jersey retired by UK, played in the nba.

Jerry Smith - played in the nba

Marvin Selvey- holds the state record for consecutive FT's made,played at UL

Rick Jones - went on to become Mr Basketball after moving before Jr year.

Tony Pietrowski - Mr. Basketball runner-up.

I saw "the horse" play many times. He was an enforcer with no shot. The years that Feldhaus was at Uk were not their best. I was shocked when I played some pickup games outdoors against some UK players. Some were not very good. I played a lot of playground basketball vs Roger and Dan Tieman and Jack Thobe and Roger Sullivan and all were better than anyone at UK with the exception of Cotton Nash who was lazy.When Dampier and Riley arrived things began to change. Had Joe Hall not become the key recruiter we may have continued to be represented by players like Ned Jennings and Dick Parsons.The SEC was a very bad joke in those days. Some of the teams that came to Memorial were pretty awful.

There was a great player from 60's that played for the Newport Wildcats, I think his name was Vories. I thinked he went on and stared for Geogetown, Ky or Berea?

Dick Vories was probably IMHO the best player to come out of Newport. His son, Mike was not bad either, and his grandson Jeff, is also a good player for HHS. Dick was also a great baseball player

PatVeep.....agree with you 100%! Conley and Kron were good recruits the year before. When talking about Boone's players, were did John Crigler go to school? Wasn't he a member of the Fiddlin Five?

I played against Dick Vories in a few basketball benefits.....if he's not the best ball-player to come from Newport, he's certainly the best shooter to come from Newport.

Agreed! If you're talking boys; hands down Draud. Smith was on a more successful team. Throw in the girls and Walz is right there with Draud, just look in the trophy case :thumb:

 

 

Not to change to Girls topic but you can find Jamie Walz' actual game shoes in the College/Pro Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield Mass. My son and I took a trip to Boston last summer and drove down to the HOF and I about flipped my wig when I saw she had her shoes in a glass case and it mentioned her scoring machine statistics. They also had a case with Clay County uniform in it, I believe it was Richie Farmer's.... the theme of both of these was KY High School Basketball Tradition.

While I did not attend this high school, and his name I might had missed in this thread, how about King Kelly Coleman from Wayland. Many have called him perhaps the greatest player ever in the Bluegrass.

 

You're right, RG. Anyone who thinks the "King" is not the Bluegrass' top prep player of all time is sadly mistaken.

Not to change to Girls topic but you can find Jamie Walz' actual game shoes in the College/Pro Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield Mass. I also saw those. They are on the same floor as the plaques. I looked at Cowens plaque and ventured into the College section. They had pictures of the National Champions all divisions. So, Cowens and Unseld are in the main hall and then there were pictures of UK, Kentucky Weslyan, and Georegtown College as National Champs. Forget the year, believe it was summer of '98. Then there are Jaimie's shoes and jersey. Pretty crazy.

Troy Mckinley one of the better true shooters the 9th Region has ever seen. Remember Mckinley and the Pioneers, the only 9th Region Team that ever won the "Sweet Sixteen".
