Asking Dad's Permission

Featured Replies

A few months back, my daughter's boyfriend called me up one day wanting to meet for dinner and drinks. I thought nothing of it, he's a Notre Dame grad and big football fan, thinking he just wanted to talk about our upcoming trip to South Bend. I told Mrs. S and she lit up like a Christmas tree. "He's going to ask you for her hand!!!! giggle, giggle, giggle..."

She spread the word and when the day of the meet came, the giggle girls in accounting were all a-wash with excitement when I left, wanting all of the details.

When I get to the restaurant, guess who is with him? My daughter. The dinner was exactly what I thought it was and had nothing to do with marriage.

During the dinner, I relayed the story of what everyone else thought he was meeting me for. His response was an emphatic, "Oh, Hell no!" To which my daughter gave him one of those looks and said, "I don't want to get married now either, but 'Oh, Hell no???'" I felt bad for the poor guy. That comment had to cost him a pretty penny. :D

Haha that's awesome.

All my friends say the same Clyde, and its not an issue if I want to or not. Shes the one (I'm her one, at least thats what she says, lol) Its more an issue of timeing and finances. However, I know that she really really really wants me to ask her dad for permission.

Perhaps you tell her dad what your intentions are, that some point you hope to ask for his daughters hand in marriage. This way sense he is in bad health like you say it opens it up a little that way you do get to ask him in case something were to happen in the future.

I didn't ask my father-in-law, and I think about why I didn't do so occasionally.

I don't like this thread, it makes me think about what I'm putting off every day.:puke: Girlfriend of 2.5 years wants something shiny and expensive for christmas and it's not a new car.

I'm starting on my 4 years with my girlfriend. Were only 21 and we just moved into our own apartment about 2 months ago. When I'm moving with my sister, first thing she says to me is. You know you have to start putting money up to save for a ring. Scared the beegzus out of me.

^ She will start putting the pressure on you soon most likely. :D

The pressure has already started from her "girlfriends", that I assure you of.

Hold out brother!!!

I have been married twice.

The first time was to a girl who came from a traditional New York Italian family only 2 generations back from the old country, the current wife is from a Croatian-Irish family that has been in the states for some time.

When I was engaged to the first I remember talking to her father(traditional head of the Italian household) and he told me that he thought it was silly that I considered asking for his blessing. He said it was his daughter's decision and he had no say in the matter. Quite the opposite of what I would have thought.

Second time around I was more or less told by my current wife that I needed to ask her parents' blessing (mom and dad are divorced) individually. It wasn't the parents wanting me to do it, it was the daughter.

So in my experience. I have no bloody clue what to expect.

We dated for a while, I went to her house early one night when I knew she was at work and told her dad of my intentions. I asked for his blessing and it was granted to me. He just asked that I take care of her! Been married ever since. He was an intimidating guy too. I was young and afraid, but it was really pretty easy.

Personally I'd go with the Facebook wall post.

Chicken.......:D

By her a mirror.

I'm with Clyde. Not sure I want to buy a steak for the guy who, possibly, doesn't give his blessing to marry his daughter. Not saying he won't because I'm sure you're a stand up guy.

I just know this, you better be one polished dude if you want to marry my daughter.

Hope he shows up in a Cardinals hat. Hope there's video.

I wasn't worried about her dad, I was more concern about her three grown brothers. I think its a very nice thing to do, I wish I did it. Good Luck.

Hope he shows up in a Cardinals hat. Hope there's video.

Only if it's his job, then maybe.
