November 22, 201114 yr Where and when did you ask? At her house one time just picked a good time where it was just me and him in a room. It really depends on the person. If he is old school in person would be best. If not I think a phone call would be enough. That's just my opinion though.
November 22, 201114 yr I'm with Clyde. Not sure I want to buy a steak for the guy who, possibly, doesn't give his blessing to marry his daughter. Not saying he won't because I'm sure you're a stand up guy. I just know this, you better be one polished dude if you want to marry my daughter.
November 22, 201114 yr Author I'm not worried about him saying no lol. I'm just curious what the best approach is and what some people on here have done that worked.

November 22, 201114 yr I simply showed up one day and asked for a minute of his time. I thought about it much longer than it took to actually do it. Piece of cake.
November 22, 201114 yr But I assume you would appreciate the fact that he would. If it's something he feels he needs to do then I'm fine either way. Just don't think it's necessary. I guess one of those old traditions that I always thought was dumb. The only thing that matter to me is if my daughter is happy and wants to be with the person. What I think is and should be irrelevant. She already told me she expects me to ask him before I ever propose. After 7 years of dating I think my wife was just happy I asked her.
November 22, 201114 yr I think there is one option. You go to the man's house (his turf) and sit down with him and his wife and let them know of your intentions. Even if he says "no" he'll respect you for showing up and asking.I"m with Clyde 100%. This is the way to do it and probably the only way to do it. Only reason not to go this route is if there is a considerable distance between the two of you.

Where do you go from there? I also have a twisted mind and when the guy from Boise State proposed after the Fiesta Bowl, what if the cheerleader had said no in front of a national audience?
November 22, 201114 yr If you have to ask and think he might say no you are doing something wrong. People keep saying that but has anyone ever had that happen to them?
November 22, 201114 yr Here's another layer to this question for my personal situation....I'm not to the point yet, but my girlfriend has her father, who I 100% will ask, but she also has her step-father, who she lived with for the past 12 years of her life until moving out about a year ago. So do I ask him too?

So do I ask him too?I would say so. Gotta make the rounds. My situation was a little unique because my wife lost her father to cancer about 10 years ago now. So I asked her mother and brother.
November 22, 201114 yr Another thing to keep in mind....Is he going to be footing the bill? If so, you definitely need to ask.
