We have a Brittany. Great dog. Excellent in the field and pretty darn good in the house.

 

Had two Vizslas before the Brit. Vs are gorgeous dogs and the most athletic breed I've ever been around. But they demand a huge amount of exercise. They are also called "velcro" dogs for good reason. They cling right to you and never leave your side. Which can be quite irritating at times.

 

I do miss the short, clean coat of the V however. It's a pain getting out all the burrs of the Brit's coat.

I've raised bird dogs since I was a small boy. Always had one. Mostly English Setters, Pointers and one Brittany. The Brittany got Parvo and passed. First time I saw my dad cry.

I did have a good friend who had a Weimeraner and it was a great dog, reminds me of the Vizsla. I always wanted one, and frankly, before we bought the GSP recently, I shopped Vizslas and Weimeraners pretty extensively. But holy guacamole, they want an arm and a leg for a pup. So, I found a fellow near Dayton who I checked out thoroughly and his bloodline is impeccable, so the GSP is now a part of the fam. LN, did you hunt the Vizsla?

Lucky Charms, here's my new baby girl, 10 months old named Maggie. She passed out last night as I was lamenting my Steelers' issues.

 

I just absolutely love the breed. They are big time goofballs when they aren't locked onto something.

Great thread! We just lost our 14 year old Lab/Shepherd mix(Rex - named after Rex Chapman, of course) last week. He was a great companion to our family. We also own a Miniature Pinscher (8 yrs old) and we recently (4 weeks ago) added a boxer (4 months old) to our family. The boxer kind of became the comforter to the Lab in his last month.

 

Regardless of which dog you choose, be prepared to have some of the best times of your life when they become part of your family. Good luck!

Anybody have any experience with a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog?

My family rescued this beautiful girl from the shelter a few weeks ago. She is an awesome puppy! She is a black lab mix, I wish I knew what with but I have no idea.

You can't see Otis too well in here, but this was from a car trip I took w/ him and the boys.

Here he is w/ Charlotte. She snuck upstairs while I was on duty and I found her upstairs with Otis playing on my son's bed.

We have a one year old Bichon Frise, named Prince William. We call him Prince. He's a great pet but is high maintaince in the grooming department----has to have a trim about every 5 to 6 weeks.

I can answer for LN, yes he did hunt the Vizsla and she was a great hunter. The thing that is great about the Brittany is she is a great hunter and a great family dog. The Vizsla just kinda seemed to be all business and that was it as for the Brittany, she just kinda is fun to have around.

 

Our Vizsla came to an untimely death. Sad, and at that point we still had a pound puppy and a stray cat. Neither of which could hunt. Realizing that both our sons had a whole lota hunting that they wanted to do and really needed a dog to do so, we decided to find another hunting dog. I wanted more of a family hunting dog and not just a dog that hunted. Found a Brittany, brought her home and LN said , "If she doesn't get out of being so timid, she's going back to the breeder." In response LN was told , "If you want another hunting dog go get one but this one stays." We kept the dog and she is a GREAT HOUSE dog and and EXCEPTIONAL HUNTING dog.

 

Glad that bluff worked. We could have ended up with three dogs and a cat.

Here's my 6 month old pup, Kemba, laying with me in bed. He really is the best dog. I can see why Husky owners are so adamant about how awesome the breed is.

 

Thx Henry. I hadn't seen Spindoc's post. Sorry Spindoc. As Henry mentioned, I did hunt both of my Viszlas. Both did a fanastic job in the field. Long story behind why we ended up with a Brit instead of another Vizsla, but I won't bore you. The Brit, also named Remy like Lucky Charm's dog and also short for Remington, has turned out to be a wonderful dog both in the field and in the house. Not near as high strung as my Vizslas. I'm very pleased with the Brit breed. I've never owned a GSP but they are beautiful dogs and the one's I've hunted over in the field have done a great job.

We just took in a 4 month-old female chocolate lab/spaniel mix. It's officially our daughter's, but she's still at school so papa is the primary caretaker. I'll try to post a pic in the next couple of days.
