I feel like my rescues know they were saved and appreciate our home. I rescued Dexter from some rescue group in Louisville. I know he was mistreated. If anyone raises there voice he sits there and shakes uncontrollably. For the first month he wouldn't let you hold him and literally seemed to sleep with one eye open. That was 2 years ago, now he's the sweetest dog ever.

 

Both my LuckyDog and BusyBuddy have been exactly as you described, like they appreciated being loved. Lucky was much more of a one-person dog. Literally...he was a nervous wreck with pretty much everyone than me. He did alright at BF's when they kindly let him stay with them during the ice storm. And I think one of the reasons I loved Lucky SO much was he really, really needed me to love him. He was a challenging personality.

 

When I first brought Buddy home, he would pee himself whenever I spoke to him. And he would never touch his food until after I went to bed. But he didn't eat. He took his kibble, piece by piece and hid it in various areas. I still find pieces to this day in random places (including being buried in my potted plants). I had to give him a t-shirt I'd worn because he was taking all my clothes and putting them in "his" chair. He takes the shirt around the house with him, like a little kid with a blanket.

Dexter did that peeing thing if you walked towards him. I think the rescue in Louisville where he came from was call Woodstock? It operated out of a Petsmart. I'm curious where he came from

My son and his wife adopted their puggle from the PetSmart in Evansville. They didn't so much pick him, as he picked them. God love him...he's my little RustyBuckets (His name is Rusty). Or, he's Buddah...he's quite rotund now. THAT is a dog that must have starved at one time. But unlike Buddy, he woofs down food like a vacuum cleaner, and doesn't know when to quit.

If I get an older dog it will almost certainly be a rescue. If it's a puppy I'm going purebred with a CAREFULLY selected breeder. I do agree with you three for the most part; but with a puppy I'd like to know more.

 

I do think there are ways you can help the cause and still get a purebred dog if that's what you would like.

Very true. And there are tons of pure bred dogs in need of rescue too. Like 00 said, there's a rescue for virtually every breed. A friend of mine is an advocate for the dachshaund rescue. I really haven't seen too many stray dauchshaunds, but....:lol:

Weird fact I learned after I got Buddy. Black dogs are the least adopted dogs in shelters. Isn't that crazy! For some reason, people don't adopt black dogs as often as brown/blond, etc.

Na, Lucy is a yorkie poo from a breeder. Dexter was from a rescue in Louisvlle. I always say he's from the mean streets of the Ville
