Saying "We have girls" may imply that the St. X boys are Gay but it doesnt go as far as the St. X fans go with implying that they are only privy to have God in their lives.

 

Implying so so very gray. The St. X fans did not say "We've go Jesus, and you don't". That would be a blatant implication that only St X is privy to have God in their lives. Just as Colerain did not say, "We have girls, and you don't". Both school hit below the belt. No boys school wants the implication that they are gay, and no public school wants the implication that Jesus is not on their side.

Before someone misunderstands your point let me say that I've been bothered by chants made by Catholic school student sections as well. No one owns the patent on cheers that upset others.

 

Ok--this is wrong, but one of my favorites---when a small private school is losing (by a lot) to a large public school, and the huge public school fan section is chanting insults while they are so far ahead----the private school fans chant "ACT SCORES, ACT SCORES"!

To clarify, I just meant that it is probably "wrong" that I was amused by some high school chanting.

Posting from an unknown bunker on Rt. 8 near River Rd, but “theguru” brought up an interesting point about freedom of speech. The bottom line is that a school has a significant amount of power to control the content of speech at school related activities. No student section has a right to cheer what they want to cheer. I know the principal at Highlands has wisely vetoed certain types of dress at football games for students that in any other forum would be totally permissible.

 

Personally the only rowdy student section I routinely see is in Park Hills. They take it and dish it out pretty evenly.

How boring and uneventful is football in KY that this topic is still on the top of page one of a discussion forum intended to discuss KENTUCKY High School Football!!

If a KY school had a coach that was fool enoungh to behave like this after a loss then it would probably make the message boards also.

This is a complete revelation to me, so you mean to tell me that all the students at Highlands aren't all very wealthy privilaged kids, there are in fact heterosexuals that attend NCC and not everyone that attends Campbell County is a farmer or plow pusher?? Knock me over with a feather. What a silly reaction, I'd think the coach would be more worried about talking to his team after a tough loss, but what do I know.

As a couple of others on here have stated, I've certainly heard much worse from student sections. In all honesty, most of the time I've heard what I consider vulgar or "over the line" chants from students it's been from public school sections.

 

That said, I never considered the "we've got girls," chant over the top, or even close to it. To me you've got to go a long way to turn that into some kind of slur. The old "soap on a rope" chant, maybe, but not "we've got girls."

 

CovCath students used to have a pretty good comeback to the "we've got girls" chant. Something to do with already having met the ladies, I think. Didn't see anything wrong with that either. Speaking of CovCath, haven't the crazies been known to chant "God's on our side," as a game is starting? Kind of funny if you ask me. Guess Bolden would pull his team off the field though.:idunno:

 

Ahh...that one was solid gold for shutting up a rival student section in my day. I believe the current DOD (dean of discipline) has that one on tight lock-down these days.

What in the heck is the big deal? Sounds like the typical Highlands vs. Cov. Cath. game to me. Someone needs to grow some.

This is the same as when a Catholic school around hear pulls a "God's on our side" cheer, or anything thrown CCH's way. None of it is serious, IMO, and anyone who thinks it is out of line has obviously never been apart of this type of rivalry.

It's not ridiculous at all if you are a man of God and the cheer genuinely offends you. But I don't expect kids at a private school to think twice before using the name of God or Jesus in something as trivial as a student section cheer. I mean, it's funny and been done for decades so it must be ok, right?

I have been in a situation where I've been too close and made a bigger deal out of something than it truly deserved. It happens.
