I'll admit that paticipated in this thread like a lot of BGP have. So , Im just as guilty as everyone else. This thread has turned into my program has the best program in the state. Everything from my program was great ,way back then or we play in the biggest class (6 A ) , we have 20 state tiles while play up two classes , we were great earlier but not so good now. We are not getting a fair shake because we are in the small school bracket , wins , losses , head to head matchups , we have seven state titles , enrollment numbers where the historical 3A team can,t or won,t play a 6A team while being a 3A or 4A team per enrollment. There are some teams that were not mentioned that may (or maybe not )be deserving. ) I am sure the word program in the thread title is the key. Sounds like Ky is proud of their football programs , we should be proud of all the football programs that has made it to the "elite status " and also the ones have made great strides and sacrifice to reach that goal . Eventually , even as we speak , coaches and players are sacrificing to reach the "elite " status . Truthfully I'm more proud of the Ky. teams that are not considered " elite " because they may realize before the season starts , they have a feeling that they might not be in the playoffs at the end of the season. To make things worse , there are players on those teams that know that they won't even see the field come game time. Those same players go to the two a day practice in August , and lift weights all year around and train all year long just like some of the better teams do. The coaches , we know what they go through , not only keeping kids safe from the heat , but also trying to make their team better , while trying to keep the fans and parents happy.

 

Sorry for the length of my post . I just would like to say that I am proud of all the football programs every player and coach goes all out to make their team elite . Sometimes it happens , sometimes it doesn't. We are just happy and thank the players and coaches for their effort and the Friday night memories. Best program for bragging rights ? Who really cares ?

At the end of the day you are right...who really cares? But in that same breath...I do...The thread asked our state's top programs of all time. Mine got disregarded because of our supposed lack of longevity. I say the last fifty years counts. Particularly the last 40 or so. That being said. I salute all the young men that sacrifice day in and day out to participate in high school football here in the Commonwealth. Either way, the thread still demands an opinion.

If Highlands had the disparity in enrollment against their competition like Trinity and St. X they would have many more titles. Highlands has played up in class and still is tied for the most titles.

Problem is though, while the top teams may be the toughest, the rest of the field in 6A is extraordinarily paltry. i.e. Lexington and Western Kentucky.

The thread was asked greatest Giridiron programs, so look at the word "greatest". Does it mean total wins, tradition Titles, impact for the kids, also a coaching staff. Diffent divisions for different programs. The smaller programs can have "great status" so comparing schools who are not on the same level. I agree with almost all the programs for the serious fan some need to be honest, every school mentioned is here for a reason. I've enjoyed reading about the schools.

What makes it (a 6A title) more impressive?

We all know the more recent history. If we asked this same question in 1985, who would we be listing as the greatest programs ever? I am enjoying hearing more about the history behind many of these programs. Male having 12 titles. Mayfield having such a rich history. I haven't heard as much about Danville's pre-1985 history. What other programs were at the top of the list looking at things before 1985?

Danville has had I think only 1 or maybe 2 losing seasons in their history. (1920's?)

 

They won a mythical title I think in the early 50's but had other undefeated teams before the playoff era.

 

The Ads won the AA title in 1962 while beating Corbin at Stoll Field in Lexington.

 

From '62 to '84 Danville went without an appearance in the State finals. Some of that has to do with the size of the playoffs then (8 teams per class were all that made the post-season) and some close losses. Ads had some fine teams in the 70's with Scrapper Letcher, Leonard Coulter, David McAfee, and Chris Jones but lost close games in the Regionals. (I particularly recall 2 tough losses to Shelby County in '76 and '77 when Chris Jones was a Junior and Senior and Danville was one of the topped ranked teams in AAA) Those teams defeated Highlands, Henry Clay, Tates Creek and company on many occasions as they Ads "played up" in AAA.

 

Tom Duffy's arrival in '80 began to strengthen the program each year and culminated in going 13-0 and winning the AAA state title vs. Hopkinsville. IMO that was the springboard for Danville to move up to another level of "Title Success."

 

That's just a little Danville background for pre-1985.
