Only a QB has the power that Palmer has right now. If Palmer retires, he only has to take one year off. Yes, he'll be 32, but will have a full year to rest his body. He will get a look with another team, a team of his choosing on the west coast. He can still get his way. Brown will lose him, and he will lose any value, just like he did with Chad Johnson. If a player doesn't want to play on your team and you can get decent value for him, let him go. That is the difference b/n New England and Cincy. Want out of NE??? Belicheck will drive you to the airport and get 4 draft picks for you. Want out of Cincy??? Nah, Brown loves the distraction.

 

It was my impression that if he retired and sat out next year, then decided to pull a Brett Favre and come back, that the Bengals would still have his rights for the remaining three years. Can anybody clarify this? If he only has to sit out one year...then I think he's definitely gone. But, if it's four years that he has to say goodbye to...then there may still be that chance (albeit a slight one) that he comes back.

You guys may be right. I may have confused it w/ sitting out the year after being drafted and signing as a free agent. If that is the case, then I see him moving on to something else. He won't be a broadcaster (well, a very good one).

The Bengals own his rights until his contract runs out, which is 2014 I believe. Favre had to get the Jets to release him prior to signing with the Vikings.

I am not a fan of Mike Brown at all, but at some point you have to draw the line in letting the inmates run the asylum. The best leverage Palmer could have had was productivity and success, which he has not had enough of. You would think if someone was really serious about retiring with 3 years left on a deal, they would have gone on and done it. If he retires, his career is over unless something changes with the current CBA.

FC I here what you're saying and understand. I just think he's done with them. You don't get anything for him then you are set back even further. I don't see them winning it in the next year or two so why not build for the future. 4-12 to a serious contender is a HUGE jump IMO. They've got good young talent. Build on it I think.

If I'm the Bengals I start being really proactive about this. I'd be like: "There is no way that we would ever let Carson Palmer play another game for the Bengals". Or the classic, "You can't build a championship organization with a guy who throws half his TDs to the other team".
