They aren't getting a draft pick this year anyway unless there is a new CBA before the draft which from everything I've read is highly unlikey. CP knew that risk and still put his house for sale and let it be known he would retire. I really don't think he's bluffing. Marvin went out to talk to him and now the Bengals might listen to offers. Pretty much sums it up that Marvin thinks he's serious. To play hardball when he's available would drive down the price. If they wait too long to trade him some of the teams that might be interested in him will look other places. The smartest football move once there is a deal is to have the NFC West teams bidding against each other the minute a deal is reached. Anything else and they lose value or have to hope he was bluffing.

 

Of coarse he is going to make it look like he is dead serious about reting. What would be the point of saying he will retire, if he doesn't make it look like he is serious. The retiring thing would be the only leverage he has, so he has to make it look like he is serious. He seems like he loves playing football, and just wouldn't give it up. Unless it has to do with his family moving away from him no matter what, which could be a possiblility. However if it is mostly about football, I think he is bluffing however he is going to make it look like he really would. I mean what is the key to a good bluff? Having a good poker face, and making the other people think that they are serious. As you said they won't probably get a draft pick this year anyways. So I say wait him out, and make him prove it. Go about two weeks into training camp, and if he shows that he is retired then. Then try to trade him, I am not about trying to get as much value for him as we can. If we lose a little bit then fine. However I don't trust this franchise to use what picks they get for him right anyways. So I rather keep the guy who gives us the best chance we have to win. Draft a young QB to prepare for the future still just like you would without him, however just try to keep him and make him prove that he is hopefully bluffing.

No body knows if he will retire. Mike Brown has shown he won't trade anyone, so Palmer is trying to actually have some leverage to force it unlike other players who tried. Which obviously yes he is going to make it look like he is serious, because that is the key to any good bluff. This franchise is horrible when it comes to evaluating talent, especially when it comes to drafting QB's. So unlike with most franchises, getting a new young guy probably will be bad. Palmer still is this teams best chance to win, so IMO I rather them try to call his bluff hopefully. If he really does prove that he will retire, and actually sits out training camp. Then yes trade him, even if that means they wouldn't get is much. It is worth that chance to try to keep him IMO.

Same here. He is still the Bengals best chance to win. The Bengals are better off taking a chance and hoping that he is bluffing, than they are trying to trade him IMO. Make him show that he really will IMO, even if you lose some value for him.

I've said for years and often gotten slammed on here that you will not build something consistant doing things the way Cincy has done it. Getting a bunch of talent without character. There's a reason the Indy's, New Eng, Pitt, Balt etc of the world are around the top. It's a combination of QB play, coaching + balance of talent/character for the most part.

Cincy buys troubled players cheap and rolls the dice. When times get tough those with little character break under the pressure. I like Plamer. I think they had a window with hiim that they could have been an elite franchise in the NFL. They did a terrible job on the buisness side. They did a terrible job the way the took care of their franchise QB and now it has finally come to a head. If you bring the face of your franchise back and he comes back how do you think it's going to be as soon as there is pressure from losing? How are the guys in the lockerroom going to feel? How motivated do you think he is going to feel inside? He will work hard because that's who he is but he's going to think the whole time I wish I could get out of here, I wish I had a differenct owner etc. I don't want to play for somebody that could care less about my health. That is IF he came back. I honestly don't think he will if they call him. He's got money. He's got decent health. It's not worth the mental and physical beating for him to stay here. I don't think he is the QB he once was and I don't think he will be in Cincy. Maybe if he gets a change of scenery but not here.

Sometimes as a business man you have to think about things in the long term. Do you honestly think Cincy is going to beat Pitt+Balt in the Division next year? Will they have a better product than NY, SD, NE, INDY? I sure as heck don't. Cincy blew it BIG TIME when they didn't deal Chad to Washington. They also missed the boat on H. Naugta in the draft. It's a no win keeping Palmer IMO. From a business point I would try to get value instead of risking getting nothing. There are A LOT of teams that need a QB bad! They would still have a shot at a Kolb or McNabb as a stop gap a couple of years. I like Palmer better than those guys but look at M Ryan, J Freeman etc. There is a chance to get a good young QB and groom him.

Honestly I think you have to beat Pitt/Balt and an upcoming Cleve team before you think Super Bowl. GB has the formula with the quick pass game, homerun threats and takeaway defense. That's what I'd try to build if I were the owner. I'm not sure Cincy can do that right now. If that's the case then I'd pull out film from 2 years ago and see how Cincy dominated the Division. It was pounding the ball with Ced Benson. The formula they went with this year was a catestrophic bust! I'd be learning from that this off season!

I am not a fan of Mike Brown at all, but at some point you have to draw the line in letting the inmates run the asylum. The best leverage Palmer could have had was productivity and success, which he has not had enough of. You would think if someone was really serious about retiring with 3 years left on a deal, they would have gone on and done it. If he retires, his career is over unless something changes with the current CBA.

I hope he does come back, and throws the ball directly to defenders on purpose. Make the Bengals bench you Carson, then you can laugh all the way to the bank. No need to retire when you can just be on the team and not care at all, not put in any effort. Heck, don't even show up to meetings or practice. Here's what the Bengals don't get... You CAN NOT force a player to play for you that doesn't want to! Why would you even want to try? I'd rather just bring in someone who has something to prove and is going to put their heart and soul into it.

You talk about how bad this franchise is at running things, which they are. However you trust the same people who have a horrible track record of drafting QB's, to actually make a good choice at QB? Especially in a draft with a bunch of question marks at QB's? I know I sure don't trust them. Which by the way you were right, they did it wrong having questionable characters like Chad, TO, etc. Which they do still need to get rid of Chad. However they seem like they do have some better character young guys who have talent now. They have an opportunity to get more in the draft. They have a new OC who hopefully will be better than Brat. A good young defense, who I expect to do better than last year as long as they are not put in tough spots all the time, like they could be if Palmer is not here.

 

You talk about competiting against the Ravens, and Steelers. Well with Palmer I believe they are 10 and 4 against them in his career. So with Palmer good reason to think they definitely beat the Ravens once, and could do it twice. They have a much easier schedule this season, just the one guy they need still is Palmer. Yes draft a young QB still, and let him sit behind Palmer and learn. You can still build for the future like people want, and keep Palmer. Next year is a huge year for this team, they need to do well. If they completely suck again, then we might be seeing the 90's all over again. If Palmer is bluffing and does come back, I think he would be 100 percent in it, especially since he will be with all the young guys and hopefully no Chad. So I don't worry about Palmer not being all in if he comes back. So I believe the Bengals best shot would be trying to call his bluff, and if he is serious and they lose some value for what they can get for him then fine. If you are under contract, you cannot become insubordinate like you are suggesting. He can show up and do the bare minimum and show a lack of interest, but he cannot skip practices or be a nuisance or would risk forfeiting his money. Which if he is serious about retiring, maybe he does not care and can start doing setups outside Skyline Chili.

:lol: Yeah I know, I took it a little too far in my post. Bare minimum is more of what I was suggesting. Either way, it hurts the Bengals organization. With Mike Brown, this is just a pride issue. How DARE someone challenge him? I just think it's messed up. The guy doesn't want to play for you, so why do you want to keep him? Get a little something out of him while you still can, and move on. I guarantee there are teams out there that think Carson could fit into their system, and would love to have him. He'd get a fresh start, and might even make a big impact. Who knows though...

Yes, but without knowing the financial situations and apparent character of the others (Pickes, Dillon, and Spikes) I would say that CP has by far the most leverage. Only a QB has the power that Palmer has right now. If Palmer retires, he only has to take one year off. Yes, he'll be 32, but will have a full year to rest his body. He will get a look with another team, a team of his choosing on the west coast. He can still get his way. Brown will lose him, and he will lose any value, just like he did with Chad Johnson. If a player doesn't want to play on your team and you can get decent value for him, let him go. That is the difference b/n New England and Cincy. Want out of NE??? Belicheck will drive you to the airport and get 4 draft picks for you. Want out of Cincy??? Nah, Brown loves the distraction.
