Spring practice quickly approaching.....not soon enough

IMO, probably will be one of the best Highlands defenses overall that has been around in a very long time.

We all know what team is the measuring stick, right Tdy.

Based on scoring defense wouldn't that have to be 1975... I sense a completely separate thread coming on...

SK will practice all this week and have a scrimmage on Friday.

Trey Pinkleton is getting some reps at QB which would be awesome with his speed and Nate Powell is looking good at running back for SK!

Also, if you want to include number of shut outs as a measuring stick, the 75 team would be at the top. :D On a serious note, this year's defense should be outstanding. Can't wait to see if they'll be as good as I expect them to be.

Is he looking as good as you said Sage did last year at this time?

Everybody knows the big difference between both teams though. HAHAHAHA!!! J/K!!!

I'm with you LN, this years "D" will be another outstanding one put together by Mr. Weinrich.

I have to admit you are right about the difference being a big one, dang out. We had 8 shutouts, and the starting D turned 4 more shut outs over to the backups in which the opponent ended up scoring. The starting D gave up a total of 27 points that year and unfortunately 20 of those were to Campbell County in the last regular season game for our one loss. Still 27 points scored against the starting D all year isn't too shabby.

The defense your year was also exceptionally good, as were the 68, 70 and 09 squads. And to be fair, it was much easier back in the day to pitch shut outs than it is these days, with the wide open offenses now used.

Maybe I'm looking through blue tinted glasses, but I think this year's D can be as good as your's and mine was.

Nate Powell will be a Junior and he should be very good. Last year against Holmes in their scrimmage he had a 60 yard run but sat out all season with an injury.

We were just talking a little while ago about the 68 and 70 teams . We were not comparing them , just talking about them .

The 70 team played the Madisonville Maroons the first game and the state championship game. Their featured running backs were Jones and Sonny Collins . Collins went to UK , was all SEC , and all american who later went on to play pro football .Collins was 1st in the state that year in the 100 yard dash while being 6 feet one and weighing 220 lbs. Also , one of the 1st players to have their head shaved , maybe thats what made him faster than the rest. :idunno: Highlands won the 1st meeting 27-14 and the state game 30-13 and being undefeated .

They also played a very good Holmes team who had Doug Speaks at running back and a talented QB named Martin. Holmes scored 16pts.

They beat Danville that year 56-0 .

They beat Cov-Cath in 70 by the score of 54-0 after losing to them the previous year by a score of 35-6.

HIGHLANDS 1970

POINTS FOR 36

POINTS AGAINST 4.6

The 1970 team also played Bryan Station that year who had over 100 players , which was unheard of back then and HHS won 19-0.

The Birds beat Hazard in the playoffs 35-0.

As for the 68 team we didn't think their schedule was as tough as the 70 team , but we sure are proud of them. In fact we are equally proud of all the HHS teams , state title or not.

Again , not comparing teams , but there were some stud players playing against HHS back in the day . Maybe not wide open offense , but Collins , Jones and Speaks were some tough customers to bring down . Next time you see somebody from the HHS 70 team , ask them .

Your kidding , right ?

To get back to the thread topic , there was no such thing as spring practice back in the 60's or 70's You would never see a water bottle at practice or games. Haircuts and bikes were" in " along with salt tablets.

It's spring and I was talking about football. Hence I was talking about spring football.

Then to take a quote from one of your infamous residents, then "say something witty and wise". I hate the fact that I know that quote but I like listening to that station.

Ha, you used that word again, History!
