Best fight you have seen at a high school sporting event?

Featured Replies

Fights happened on a continuous basis at football and basketball games between Dayton and Bellevue during my time as a high school student. If memory serves me right, fights took place during these games and after them from the late 80's up to a few years after I finished high school, which '96 was when I graduated high school. The players would fight, students in the stands, adults, etc. The rivalry was always heated and it still is in some ways, but it isn't nearly as heated and fighting doesn't occur anything at all like it used to. Overall, games between these two have cooled off far more compared to the way they used to be.

Basketball game, 1973, Bell County at Whitley County. A fight breaks out. The benches empty, stands erupt, a true donnybrook ensues. I'm in the pep band. I've got a weapon. I'm ready to go.

The band director yells at us. "National Anthem!!!" "National Anthem, NOW!!!!". So we start playing the "Star Spangled Banner". As God is my witness, everything stopped, right there. Like somebody had frozen time. Then everybody in the place turned toward the flag hanging in the center of the gym and put their hands on their heart. When the the Anthem ended, the fight was over. Everything calmed down. Technicals were handed out and the game resumed.

To this day, it is one of the most amazing things I have ever witnessed.

Wow...smart band director.

I remember in 1987 during a basketball game we were playing at Augusta and our Center Tim Kelsay was jockeying for position during an inbound play. The kid from Augusta did something to set him off because he turned and gave him the "one hitter quitter".

Also was in a ton of heated games playing Dayton where cheapshots were the norm.

An old-timer from Holmes or NewCath will have to help me out.

I'd guess it was about 75 or 76 and these two played in the region semis(I think). It was at Conner. A kid from Holmes fouled out and a fan came down to say something to him. Fight broke out. Floor was packed with people including some police officers.

Anyone?

That used to be a great rivalry, I was at Holmes in 1980 when Larry Redmond and company upset Dicky Beal and company. When the game concluded Holmes fans rushed the floor and knocked out the ball boy for New Cath. We walked out with the cops that night!

...or in a backyard in Edgewood on Madonna at a party...after a little too much "my school is better than your school" chest pumping...between a player who went on to back up one of the Manning brothers in the NFL and a mediocre high school center who went on to work in construction...where both of the participants walked away with broken noses.

I would have liked to seen that one.

Closest thing I saw was when two rival 16th region schools had just finished playing a girls basketball game. Winning team's cheerleaders were out on the floor doing a sort of victory chant/dance, when all of a sudden things started being thrown on the floor by fans of the team that lost. Among the items thrown were pop bottles filled with tobacco juice.

Great story! I'll have to suggest that to my local schools in case civility ever breaks down at one of our games. :thumb:

Paintsville/Prestonsburg fight.

It needs dueling banjos in the background....

I was at a Mason County/Walton game at Walton in the late 80s/early 90s where a fight broke out on the floor in a JV game and some Mason County senior citizens knocked me out of the way in order to get down to the floor. Protecting their boys.

I believe the year was 1986. I also saw a good one between Walton and Conner in the 1980 districts at Conner.

I'm not sure why, but that just made me burst out laughing. Great story! I'm sure that's something you'll never forget.

When I was young I remember Rockcastle playing Corbin in football. Corbin scored and one of their fans/cheerleaders began to run around Rockcaslte's track with their huge Corbin flag. Apparently some Rockcastle fans didn't like that and chased him down and tackled him, starting a fight. I was pretty young so I don't remember much after that...just remember him getting tackled. I think it got broken up pretty quickly.

I love the added touch of the announcers. It's just like pro wrestling.

"We've got a fight or something down here."

"WE'VE GOT A FIGHT!"

I am not sure if it was a SK Freshman football game or middle school game but my friend Jake Kiser got into a fight he played center he took a d-lineman and grabbed him by the face mask and flipped him over his head and fell on top of him and started punching him it was a pretty good fight. Also the first SK/Ryle game this year both teams got into after a Ryan Winkler kickoff return he fumbled it and a bunch of Ryle players where taking cheap shots at him while he was down then a bunch of SK players came running over turned into a big shoving match.
