Best fight you have seen at a high school sporting event?

Featured Replies

There have been a couple Cov Cath / Highlands fights between students that were pretty intense, but they typically happened in the parking lots after exiting the gym.

...or in a backyard in Edgewood on Madonna at a party...after a little too much "my school is better than your school" chest pumping...between a player who went on to back up one of the Manning brothers in the NFL and a mediocre high school center who went on to work in construction...where both of the participants walked away with broken noses.

Magoffin County vs. Paintsville on the football field after the game in 1993. I had an inside view for that one.

Here is another one involving Magoffin County in a preseason game:

Conner/Danville in football I think it was in the early 80's.

I wasn't there, but the story back in the day was that a knife fight broke out in the stands at one of the county (where I grew up) rivalry football games. Games for the rest of the season were moved from Friday nights to Saturday afternoons.

Ashland and Clay County had a pretty good one in the 1990 playoffs.

In the CovCath gym in the very early 60's! Cacuis Clay in the Gold Gloves state boxing matches! Now that was a fight!

Had to be prior to 1960. He was in the 1960 Olympics and turned pro right after.

The best fight that I've personally witnessed was during a Cov Cath / Holy Cross basketball game. I think it was the district tournament game - I'd guess in 2004. Cov Cath was shooting a FT. As the teams lined up for the free throw, a female fan came out of the stands. She appeared to be exiting CCH's gym right in front of where CCH was shooting the free throw. Instead, she walked up to a Holy Cross cheerleader and grabbed her by the hair and went to town. The fight went on for maybe 30 seconds before a cop came and broke it up. The girl who walked out of the stands left with a clump of the cheerleader's hair. It was AWESOME.

Naturally, the CCH student section immediately began chanting "That was awesome" as well. Indeed it was.

That was crazy..I remember that.

Was that the year they played twice ('83) when Conner won the state title? Or did they hook up the next year as well when Danville won it in '84? :idunno:

Beechwood was playing at Cov Cath one year, I think it was a district basketball tourney as I remember that lady announcer from Dixie yelling for people to get off the court. I think it was around 1986, after the game during the hand shakes a fight broke out, I still have it all on video tape somewhere.

Another interesting one I thought of, althought it didn't end up in a fight, it just seemed like it would, was when a Conner basketball Dad came charging down from the stands to let his son's head coach-David Taylor-know what he thought of his coaching. And this was in the Regional tournament at Holmes. I forget who the Cougars were playing. Dad had to be escorted out by the Covington police. I always wondered what the kid thought about his Dad's antics.
