Coach Calipari Uncensored

What about drill sergeants? Or other military men with authority?
Wow, you brought the can opener for a whole new can of worms.

Common knowledge. Not like I'm gonna win a popularity contest over there.

If you would come home, I'd campaign for you a win.

The military is it's own world, SG, and not at all the same.
But we are still talking about people around the same age under their leadership.

I only said "men" as we are talking about male coaches. :thumb::D

Isn't it? I would say if you polled most high school and college athletes, they would compare playing sports to being in the military. They tell you when to sleep, when to get up, what to eat, when to eat, what to wear, what not to wear, how to act, what play or formation to run. And don't think for a minute that coaches don't see themselves as Generals, they are just as type A as any military leader and it is their way or the highway. They expect and demand total commitment and are strict in their rules.

So sorry to tell you you're wrong, but athletics are NOTHING comparable to military. They may think it's miltary-like, but they'd learn much differntly if actually in the military.

The coach has to be able to get a kid's attention and get his point across to him. I'm sure if there were another way to do that, he would use it. I don't think any coach enjoys jumping their players like Calipari did the other night. I'm curious to all of you that have disagreed with Calipari did, what alternate method would you have used to get the point acrosss and get the kid's attention? Remember in this situation we are dealing with a young adult, not a kid. Not only that but also an extremely talented basketball star. Its easy to criticize someone if you've never had to be in a position like Calipari. Even I can admit to that.

Come on RM. Is it life or death? No. But the structure is very similar, and by design.

What difference does it make the age? It's about respect!

Once again, it's about respect. Your boss owes you respect. Language such as Calipari used is not respectful. As well, it indicates a lack of self control. As to you allowing your boss to use that language, that's an indication of a lack of self-respect. However, given your posts on BGP, I don't think you suffer from a lack of self-respect. I'll put this conversation down to trying to stand by your assertion and justify it no matter what.

What else is he supposed to do? The kid got shamed on national TV. If it's true he doesn't mind, I'm sorry for him. However, I suspect he's a team player and is taking one for the team. To do otherwise would invite much more criticism than keeping his mouth shut and toeing the party line.

Regardless of how I feel about this situation and Cal's use of profanity to motivate, no one is owed respect. Respect is earned because of your actions/efforts.

So you get to pick and choose similar situations to fit your argument? Convenient...

Whatever. You know that it's not the same. You guys are just trying to keep this going to justify cursing at a player on national TV. I'm not the only one who thinks it's wrong. And if you don't think it's wrong, maybe it says more about you than the people who do. (You used collectively, not an attempt to single you out GT)

Whatever. It is very much the same. Adult male authority figure cussing out young adult. Apples to apples...

Minus the camera, of course.

Semantics... :D

No it's not the same. If Jones doesn't like what Cal says he can go home. That's not really an option in the military. UK doesn't own Jones, the military would.

Really? Seriously? You have to know that the military is it's own world. Much happens in the military that wouldn't be allowed in the civilian world.
