I was expecting 10-15 and it looks more like 30 or so once the last two year's players are added. Of the BCS level players, UK signed nearly half of them so maybe the Wildcats do a better job in N. Ky. than some think.

 

I started a thread about a year and a half ago to try to get an idea about how many D1 players we had from Kentucky as a whole, so I just did a little editing to the somewhat comprehensive list I compiled starting at post #78 from the thread: LINK. Looking back at it, I think I might go through and try to update the list in the next few days.

Perhaps you are right about UK doing a better job than some think; then again, look at how some that got away did at other schools. Looking at just the Highlands players that I'm more familiar with: Sester and Grover both made all Big Ten teams at Purdue; Smith made All SEC at Tennessee; I think Gino made all conference at UC (not sure what conference UC was in at the time) and set UC passing records I believe); his brother Ben has had a pretty good career at UC; and Mitchell, well we all know how Mitchell did and is doing. UK might have recruited some/most of them but my problem is that they did not recruit them hard enough, early enough from what I recall. I don't think they ever offered Grubbs and if he stays healthy, the kid is going to be a big time college O lineman. I remain convinced that if UK is ever going to really do well in the SEC, they have to get almost every kid from KY that is capable of playing SEC caliber football. Sure we have to recruit other areas heavily, and perhaps over time and with a lot of effort, we can convince some top tier kids from Florida, Georgia and the other hot spots to choose UK over the real power house programs, but I think we are kidding ourselves if we think that we are going to get the top tier talent to choose UK over the Floridas, Bamas, Auburns, LSUs and other top programs in the country until we really, really elevate our program. In order to do so, we have to get the SEC level talented kids from Ky to go to UK. And in order to do so, we have to focus on them early and we have to focus on them heavily. Waiting until others offer is too late in my opinion.

 

Hopefully Joker reviews every Ky high school roster every and makes a point to look at every kid taller than 6'3 or 6'4 who is a sophomore or junior; hopefully Joker is communicating with every high school coach to identify every kid that has has great speed as a sophomore and junior and takes a serious look at them in their sophomore and junior years. If he determines they have SEC talent, he should offer them as soon as he legally can and then shower them with love and attention. Ky high school football has not improved to the level that UK can win in the SEC with primarily Ky kids; but it has improved to a degree that there are more and more kids graduating each year that have SEC caliber talent. UK can not afford to write off Ky to concentrate on other areas and then deal with those Ky kids as an afterthought. UK has to get a majority of them and then hope that they can continue to find a few diamonds in the rough from the hot spots that the other schools passed over. With Strong at UL, I think it's going to be more difficult for UK to land the top Ky players unless UK gets on those kids early, fast and hard.

 

Please don't mistake my thoughts on this issue as my thinking Joker isn't doing a fine job recruiting; I'm very pleased with what he's doing but I think they could do better in Ky.

Good catch. But if you look at the list there is no Collinsworth, Simpson, Nichols, T. Brown, Hempel. So let's say most of the guys from the last two years aren't listed there.

I have little doubt that with time in the weight room Grubbs would have been good enough to play in the SEC. He was a much, much quicker and athletic high school O lineman than Hines was in high school and also had the height and intelligence (a very smart kid) to play in the SEC. And don't start questioning my assessment of O linemen my friend.

I made the list in October 2009. Grubbs had committed at that time, AC hadn't. :lol: Picky-picky.

We'll disagree on Grubbs not being good enough to play in the SEC like we'll continue to disagree on UK making a mistake to not offer early to Ky kids. If Stuart Hines from BG is good enough to play in the SEC (and since he starts for UK, he's obviously good enough to play in the SEC), I have little doubt that with time in the weight room Grubbs would have been good enough to play in the SEC. Hines will most likely be UK highest projected draftable guy next year. He will leave UK a three year starter. There is a 70 foot mural of him outside the stadium at UK...you post is full of "if's: and "but's" but the proof in UK choosing Hines is there. What has Grubbs done to validate your thinking over the past four years?

He is a frosh at Miami of Ohio. Give the kid a chance. I have seen both of them play in high school. Grubbs is 6'5 295 with very good feet and athletic ability. The kid was a starter on the basketball team for HHS and was very productive. From what I saw I was much more impressed with Grubbs than Hines in high school..JMO

W.E., Grubbs just graduated in '10 I believe and is a redshirt at Miami, OH. Grubbs was a very good player but his offer sheet included 2 sunbelt schools and 3 MAC schools. The 2 most bottom feeding conferences in FBS. Hines offer sheet in 2008 included the ACC, SEC, Big East, Big 12. But the OL guru leatherneck says Grubbs is on the same level. Of course he is entitled to his opinion, but the the offer list doesn't support his opinion.
