Highlands lost alot of starters there QB only started half the season. Only thing Simon Kenton lost was the OL and Miles Simpson. Chad Lawrence has started since he was a Sophomore and return all there WR's. The Defense returns 8 starters. Highlands would have there hands full if they played each other.

 

I think you make some great points here UKFan, Highlands will have to fill some key positions lost from last yr, like AC and the OL line. Pat Towles started as a Soph last yr and Highlands returns just 1 WR's. The defense returns 7 players who either started or played in most games last yr. Unless one is popping Gello Shots then I dont see this match being any different than last yrs mythical matchup and I see Highlands winning by at least 3 TD's.

Not that I'm a math major, but the Highlands QB started 9 out of 15 games, which if I'm correct is better than half. According to the roster he's an inch taller than he was last year and is almost 50 pounds heavier. Things change in a year for a lot of players and teams. For those that have not seen Cory Compton for Highlands watch out.

 

Great points. Particularly about Compton. He is a big physical runner. Birds have been blessed with some pretty darn good RBs over the years, but I really like the three headed monster this year of Compton, True and Streeter. They are flying under the radar as of now, but I really expect that to change as the season unfolds. Which will take a lot of pressure off of the passing game. Towles will shine this year and he has a lot of very high quality receivers to work with this year. Their lack of PT last year doesn't concern me one bit. As the O line gels, the Birds will have another exceptional O. D will be outstanding (again). No doubt we'll miss some very talented kids that graduated, but I really like what we have coming back. If kids stay healthy, I don't see a drop off from last year. From all accounts, the kids have been working extremely, extremely hard in weights and with conditioning. I think they have a big point to prove to N. Ky and the State: yes last year's team was very good and some exceptional kids graduated, but this year's team isn't chopped liver and can be just as good. Highlands players are always extremely dedicated and commited; give them a little extra motivation and a point to prove and that dedication and commitment borders on turning into personality disorders. Man, I can't wait for the first game.

Leatherneck, you are 100% right on on you assessment. The entire D has looked outstanding since spring football. O was a little bit behind in spring, but has developed and has looked awesome during summer ball. The experience that Towles has from last year is big time. Not only has Pat looked good at HHS, but he has looked great at camps, and some of his supporting cast has traveled to the same camps and put up some great stats with him. They dominated UK's skills football camp.

Highlands will work hard and be right where they always are at the end of the season-on top. I am glad Ryle and one adamant fan in Independence think differently, as I wish there was a challenger to the Birds.

I'd really like to agree with you on this one, and I wouldn't ever say that Cov Cath couldn't beat Ryle. However, given Cov Cath's history with "bowl games", and the overall matchup as a whole, I think a Cov Cath victory is rather unlikely.

Agreed. CovCath could beat Ryle but being the 1st game of the year, until the QB situation is settled that will be tough. They do have a great backfield, probably the best receiver in NKY , and a solid O-Line though to help whoever is running the show.

I hope they do surprise folks. I always like seeing NKY schools bringing the competition.

 

At the same time, even with their 9-3 record from last season, I don't see how they can realistically be ranked at #3 this go-around when the only real teams to test their mettle last year were Dixie, Withrow and Lex Cath, all of which handed Holmes a loss. Not to mention the fact that last year they only played two of the other 9 teams in the top ten...

 

Any clues what Holmes' schedule is looking like this year?

 

I believe they have the same scheduele since the contracts have not expired, I also agree with you on Cooper they are on the brink of pushing the top 10 I just wouldnt put them in it yet as you said yes Campbell County should be. As far as Cov Cath not finishing in the top 5 because the strength of schedule is rediculous, I just dont see them being healthy when it matters most. I havent had a chance to see Cov Cath play in the last year so im just speculating.
