Serious as a heart attack. Cooper returns Bradley who can be argued as either the 1st or 2nd top back in NKY this season. They return all their receivers who have now played together in the offense for 3 years. They will have a new starting QB in Morris(assuming the job is his) that is not only a threat to pass but run, not to mention they lost only two starting offensive linemen from this last year. Beechwood is a class act program and an extremely successful one. I'm not saying that Cooper would kill them when they played, but it certainly would not be a three touchdown victory. I had the chance to watch Cooper play Holmes last year and had it not been for a late kickoff return to seal the deal for Holmes, that game could have gone the other way.

Most of the defense is back.

This still barely brings the junior class into play that played UP (unlike Cooper who played down in 2009--and still struggled until Beechwood lost one of their best players in the frosh championship game--leaving mostly 7th/8th graders on the field) to win the large school freshman championship in 2008.

 

Cooper would not beat Beechwood, they would not kill Beechwood ... or even hang close to Beechwood.

Comparing Holmes to Beechwood is like ..... comparing the Pittsburgh Steelers to Prairie View A&M.

I have no clue how you think that a 3rd year program would hang with a Beechwood team that is projected to be one of their better ones in the past few years.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Dixie will be somewhat young and inexperienced this coming season while also making the switch to Zeke Pike at Qb which could take some time for the offense to gel.

 

Holmes returns virtually all of their skill guys from this past season and Dixie barely beat them AT Dixie. While I think Dixie might be a better TEAM, it wouldn't surprise me to see Holmes have the better talent and prove to be better than Dixie this year.

 

Can't wait for the season to start. So many questions to be answered...I love it.

 

Good points Walter. While Holmes showed real improvement last year, I think this is the year that Holmes really breaks out. From what I understand Holmes has a lot of talent returning and the kids have really bought into Lickert's system. An administrator at the school (who admittedly may be biased) told me that the off season conditioning program this past winter was the best he's ever seen it. Supposedly the kids tasted a little bit of success last year and really want more. If accurate, Holmes may be a very formidable opponent for a lot of N. Ky schools this year.

I look for the Holmes vs. Beechwood game to be very very close this year with the home team pulling out the win.

As far as the Varsity teams this year I wouldn't take a guess as I haven't seen Beechwood play in the past few years but Cooper will be a formidable team as long as Bradley stays healthy!

Not trying to get too far ahead of things, but the way things are looking in 1A, the expected semifinal game of Mayfield vs. Beechwood will produce the favorite in the title game. If Beechwood loses there to a loaded Mayfield team it will not be a sign of a downturn at Beechwood. As pointed out above, the Beechwood junior class won the freshman championship over all the big schools so Beechwood is looking pretty solid the next two years.

 

I agree with you when it comes to Holmes. I do think the program is headed in a very good direction and it is nice to see that happen. But I want to see them beat some of the top programs in N. Ky. before I move them too far up in the ratings.

 

Cooper is going to be interesting to watch. Bradley proved himself but I am not sure about Morris at QB. He is a super athlete but sophomore QB's rarely lead big school teams to many victories, especially in a young program trying to get itself established.

We can agree to disagree when it comes to whether anyone would have made a difference.

But ... I still find it pretty interesting that Cooper is remotely proud of winning the small school freshman championship against a team that had 5 or 6 starters who were actually freshman. (The rest were 7th or 8th graders) but .. if that makes the Jags feel good about their selves .. I am all for it.

 

The difference will be what happens with those kids as they move up.

Beechwood has historically proven that they take kids who are not the most talented--and develop them into talented units.

At this point--the verdict is out on Cooper---and it shouldn't come in until the season is over.

 

Beechwood will have a few open spots in the schedule next year .. it sure would be great to Cooper bang heads with the red and white Tigers.

I believe they beat Dixie LIckerts first year. I do believe that the move to 4a was te best move for them. They will be much improved from past years even last year, I believe they should beat Dixie and play Withrow close again maybe even pull it out.
