February 18, 201511 yr Oscar Nominated for Best Picture, "The Imitation Game" starring Benedict Cumberbatch tells the story of how extraordinary brilliant mathematician (Father of Modern Computing) Alan Turning cracked the perviously thought to be uncrackable Nazi Enigma Code during WWII helping to end the war and saving millions of lives. After a year of government-mandated hormonal therapy Alan Turning committed suicide on June 7th, 1954. He was 41 years old. Between 1885 and 1967 approximately 49,000 homosexual men were convicted of gross indecency under British Law. In 2013, Queen Elizabeth II granted Turning a Posthumous Royal Pardon, honoring his unprecedented achievements. Historians estimated that breaking Enigma shortened the war by more than two years, saving over 14 million lives. It remained a government-held secret for more than 50 years. Turning's work inspired generations of research into what scientists called "Turning Machines". Today we call them computers. Seriously important man in ending the war, and helping to launch the computer age and unappreciated for far too long because he was also found out to be a homosexual, and opted for government-mandated hormonal therapy (chemical castration) other than two years in prison because he feared not being able to advance his invention, ultimately committing suicide while being ruined by the hormonal therapy. He was found dead by his mother with a cyanide laced apple with a bite taken out of it at his bedside. Interesting trivia: Steve Jobs loved the Beatles (recorded on Apple records), grew up on a Macintosh Apple farm, Apple computer's logo is an Apple with a bite taken out of it. Coincidence? February 18, 201511 yr Finally watched the Jack Reacher movie. Disappointed. Slow. If I had not read the book I would not have been interested. Hard to follow if you are not familiar with the story and background.

February 18, 201511 yr We saw The Imitation Game at the Frankfort Grand Theatre this weekend. It was very good, and we enjoyed the venue....one can read B-BALL-fan's synopsis for more details (spoiler alert!). BTW, we won the war...he didn't mention that.

Just read the history of the Frankfort Grand Theatre and it's very cool that they were able to save and restore it. Love when that happens.
February 22, 201511 yr Just watched "Alexander and the Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day". Really loved the message about family and sticking together and that the bad days make us appreciate the good days. (Yeah--I don't get out much. )
February 22, 201511 yr Finally watched Schindler's List. Dvr'd it a couple of weeks ago. AHC showed it uncut with no commercials. Should have won at least 2 more Oscars than it did, for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. I was prepared for this movie so it wasn't as shocking as the end if The Boy in the Striped Pajamas was. I had NO idea what that was about and stunned at the end.
February 22, 201511 yr Saw Kingsman tonight. A really fun movie. We really liked it. I saw it tonight as well and enjoyed it.
