Why All The Vitriol For The Tea Party?

Featured Replies

"Just fed up now" is the issue. Why now? Did we hear of the TEA party from 2000 to 2008?

That's the problem. I have no problem with them saying we spend too much and are taxed too much. I doubt if many people have a problem with that.

As Steve Martin used to say its "time...time...timing."

I know many on BGP like to avoid responding to my posts, and I can understand why sometimes. I’m sure I won’t gain any responders on this one. Anyway, my thoughts as to “why now” are this.

1.FAITH. It’s obvious (by the results of the election) lots of people had faith in BHO. The media portrayed him as Messiah-Like and they bit.

2.PROMISE. BHO promised to (and almost had me convinced) he would govern from the middle. Many in the “middle” now see this promise was never intended to be acted upon. He was portrayed as one that would unite us, instead we seem more divided than ever.

3.SPENDING. This country was sick of the spending the former administrations and after the bank bailout under Bush became reality, it opened eyes and ears that had been shut. No more “Business as usual” became “business as usual’ with more spending. We’ve never seen spending like this.

4.RACE. BHO is the first black President of the United States. That in its self opened eyes and ears to scrutiny, just as the first woman President will. People paid a little more attention due to the fact he is black. And no, not in a racist way. Politics simply became interesting to more people when he won.

All of the above are some of the reasons I believe people are “just fed up now”. People of this country are looking closer at government than ever before in my lifetime and they don’t like what they see. BHO is not to blame for the biggest part of it either. Whether it is the color of our President’s skin or the fact the media has overexposed him, I am one that is thankful. “We the People” seem to be getting more involved in government. This country may just be smack dab in the middle of its finest hour.

Some of those opposed to a president will do almost anything to bring them down. Some are doing it with Obama now, some did it with Bush before. This is nothing new. But the past 15+ years it has gotten worse and worse.

Some who support their argument and wish to squash the opposition will use the extremes of the opposition and tie things those few say or do to the rest.

We now interject terms such as: racist, KKK, communist, socialist, elitist, homophobe, whacko, etc to firm up our argument against a group.

Nobody ever wants to recognize that the other side of the argument may have some valid points, ... so let's just squash them all by labeling them with scary and revolting names. It all just makes me sick to my stomach.

And I don't want to hear 'its the right, its the left, its the liberal, its the conservatives, it the democrats, its the republicans, etc'. It is happening on both sides, and has been for years.

Good post. A lot of this has to do with why I've pretty much washed my hands of national politics.

I actually agree with most of what you said here.

With the exception of what is in Bold. I think we are at our weakest moment in a long time, but hopefully we will spin out of it, and get back to the fundamentals of what made our country great. So if that is what you meant, then I agree.

I believe we need to only allow property owners the opportunity to vote. Now I know we are way past the time when this is plausible, but think about it, the have nots are always going to vote for the haves to give them more and more, and that is where we are now. Personal responsibility is desparately needed. I could care a less if it is a Republican or Democrat in the White House, but if folks think the government should take care of them, then that is wrong, wrong, wrong.

Wow I've officially read it all. Someone advocating Jim Crow laws in 2010.:walk:

Regardless of which "side" you place yourself, you have to give Habib credit for laying it out about as well as it can be.

I agree that all should be involved. All should pay attention. All should question the need for spending and taxes.

However, it certainly raises the eyebrow for some that taxes and spending JUST became in issue starting on January 20, 2009.

Do you really think the last paragraph is true? I recall reading and hearing a lot of really conservative folks saying they would not vote for McCain and that they despised him. I'd venture a lot of the Tea Party folks are some of the same conservatives that loathed McCain. Which if true, undermines the racism motivation as well as the fact they were silent on the issues until Obama became President.

You may not have heard of the formal Tea Party until after Obama got elected, but a lot of staunch conservatives were complaining strongly and frequently about Bush's spending decisions pretty early in his second term. My guess is that once the Republicans nominated McCain, the staunch conservatives "gave up" on the Republican Party and started working on the formation of the Tea Party. The Health Reform disaster (my opinion) has only served to galvanize their opposition to Obama.

I think it's very unfair and inaccurate for people to say that a whole lot of folks weren't upset with the out of control federal spending until Obama got elected.

So spending and taxes were fine in 2000 to 08? Our taxes were low?
No, but it's worse now, really over the last 6 years or so. But people still protested then, there just wasn't a Tea Party.

I know how you and everyone else would take it. That is how the Tea Party operates as well. The do sticker shock.

You are correct about many attacked Bush. But can you honestly say at the same level.

By the way, I listen to Rush and watch Fox news. Then I watch CNN. and between the 3 I try to find the truth.

Nice try at spinning this, but you brought a group well known for racism above all else into this, now you want to cry foul.

Yes, at the same level. Have you forgotten all the Kill Bush signs and such?

Yeah, you're right, Bush got off easy...

Tough economic times put a lot of pressure on everyone, some obviously more than others. I think this contributes to some extent to the vitriol coming from both sides, in D.C. and Frankfort.

Are you saying only property owners are responsible?

Wow I've officially read it all. Someone advocating Jim Crow laws in 2010.:walk:

The requirement of owning property goes way back, long before Jim Crow Laws were ever thought of.

Here's an idea:

If only property owners get to vote, then that would relieve all renters of the burden of taxes. I mean...if I can't vote, no one can claim I have representation.

Thanks. I really appreciate that. :irked:
