Neither Republicans nor Democrats have proven to be conservative with regards to fiscal issues or the size of government. The only differ on what they want to spend my money on and how they want to expand the government.

 

The only aspect where you get a true conservative vs. liberal contrast is social issues...pro-life/pro-choice, gay marriage, etc.

That's the problem. I have no problem with them saying we spend too much and are taxed too much. I doubt if many people have a problem with that.

There were conservatives who disliked the excessive spending and creation of new federal programs. Rush and Hannity spoke out, there were day to day citizens calling their shows and complaining about the spending, but it was just a low roar at that time, that has expanded to this day. And let us remember the losses the Republicans experienced. Some of it was for wanting the other party in power, but some of the Republican losses can be blamed on a lack of conservative backing for candidates that were just Democrat-lite in nature.
