October 20, 200520 yr The champagne corks are popping over at Male high school as we speak. Red must be the happiest man on earth. Titles as far as the eye can see. They won't mean anything but they will be won nontheless. I really hope that X romps male Friday. Red did not look too happy leaving St. X this evening after watching his freshmen loose to the Tigers 46-7.
October 20, 200520 yr A couple of things worth noting: this thing has a long way to go before it actually comes final. Stay calm and rational. Over reacting can do more harm than good. Unless the privates schools are going to travel and look hard and long to find opposition, it makes sense for them to stay in the KHSAA (most state athletic associations will not permit their teams to play teams that are not a member of their home state's athletic association). So if X wants to play Colerain, Elder etc, they'll need to stay in the KHSAA. One of the main supporters speaking in favor of the proposal talked as if the private schools were going to overrun the state. He referenced the number of "our kids" that were going to private schools (around 98,000 I believe he stated). He talked about the need for this proposal in order to make sure that public schools "survived". A wee bit melodramatic for me, but he clearly felt that if this proposal did not pass, it was only a matter of time before the public school system totally crashed due to the proliferation of private schools. Rather interesting to put it mildly. Finally the vote was done anonymously so there will be no way of finding out who voted for and against it unless the voter him/herself discloses it. Before every one against the proposal starts going haywire, the anonymous vote was actually an attempt to prevent the proposal from passing. The thinking was that if it was an anonymous vote, the principals and ads would vote against it (against the direction of their superindentents). In this case it did not work. I'm sure this thing will boil down to who puts the most pressure on the legislators. I honestly think that in the meantime there will be efforts to come up with acceptable compromises on the issues. Final advise: again stay calm. No reason to do anything yet. I do know that the rep for Highlands voted against the proposal-at least he told me he did and I am certain he was telling the truth.
October 20, 200520 yr Just fully funded full rides for the best and brightest they see comming up. Count on it... Public schools ALREADY give fully funded full rides to their students. Every last one of them. At everyone else's expense.
October 20, 200520 yr An interesting thing I seen on a national TV telecast tonight. In a national poll people were asked what they thought about the state of the public school system. 1% = Excellent 15% = Good 35% = Fair 49% = Poor
October 20, 200520 yr Public schools ALREADY give fully funded full rides to their students. Every last one of them. At everyone else's expense. I know that. I'm on your side here, just pointing out that you wouldn't see a ton of free rides, but the $$ to get the best would be there if they were no longer in the KHSAA...
October 21, 200520 yr Public schools ALREADY give fully funded full rides to their students. Every last one of them. At everyone else's expense. Yup, we ALL pay for students to attend public schools.
October 21, 200520 yr But not from other places he mentioned??????????????????????????? Well if Manual only accepts students under very strict criteria, why was a former Trinity sophmore (and football player) allowed to transfer? It all happened in a matter of a couple of days. Explain that. Isn't it true that Manual has and has had students from outside Jefferson County?
October 21, 200520 yr Mass exodus? Nope. Just fully funded full rides for the best and brightest they see comming up. Count on it... Yea, but like I said in Lou, Lex, and NKY. Most of the private schools out in the state don't have comparable budgets. A star player at Apollo has a father who basically wrote the rushing record books at OCHS. Now, maybe his son didn't want to attend OCHS, but if money were not an issue for the school system I would seem likely that he would now be playing for the Aces. Fact is that recruitment or not, athlete or not, OCHS cannot afford to give out very many full rides. This proposal will only cause their existing budgets to be stretched even farther, in my opinion leaving very little to use to recruit athletes with full scholarships.
October 21, 200520 yr If the students grades were up to the standards I see no problem with his admission into Manual and the amt. of day it took i do not see the relvence b/c transfers can be a matter of hours in some cases. For example a student at Male is not happy and wants to attend their home school all they must do is tell an AP and they will contact the childs homeschool and the records will be transfered that day. I too have heard of students from outside of the county attending public schools (home schools) other than Manual I asked an AP at Male one day what the case was with this and they said any student outside of Jefferson Co. is welcome to attend but must pay tuition, but that is a rare case b/c many students want to attend school with the same friends they have grown up with and see no point in having to pay tuition to go to another public school that is just further away than their residing home school.
October 21, 200520 yr Here is my 2 cents worth... I am very glad and I hope there is a seperation and here are my reasons. 1. Public schools can not be selective and give placement exams for admittance. Privates can, and provide scholarships. Scholarships, in high school. 2. They don't deal with the same demographics as a typical public school. ( more could be elaborated ) 3. They are not held accountable by state testing and the norm grading system. 4. Resources are no where the same. When you compare private donations to having a bake sale for uniforms, there is no equal playing field. 5. The rule of playing the best, well here is actuality in the matter. If you were a kid from Whitley County or Owensboro and had a very good team. Wouldn't you want to have the opportunity to win a state title. As of now, X or T will win that battle. 6. The playing fields are no where the same in terms of populations. All girls or all boys have the unfair advantage of having a huge drawing pool. 7. As for going to a place to receive more recognition, let me say this. I came from a very, very small school in rural KY and I played Division I football. The bottom line is if you have the talent and size, they will find you. It is your ability, not who you play for or who you play against.

Good one. Tell me, were the Trinity faithful donning black armbands at the prospect of ending the "rivalry games" with hapless Eastern and Ballard?

Good one. Tell me, were the Trinity faithful donning black armbands at the prospect of ending the "rivalry games" with hapless Eastern and Ballard? Not particularly, I generally don't care too much to attend a blowout however there are two exceptions and they happen to have been mentioned in the above quote.
October 21, 200520 yr Recruiting is cheating, legal or not. Not to worry private schools. It'll never be implemented.
