Name a cover version of a song which was better than the original

Featured Replies

I started thinking about this with the thread about Jennifer Hudson recording a new version of 'One Shining Moment' for the NCAA tourney. I rarely like the remake or cover versions of songs as much as the original.

Can you name a cover version of a song that you liked better than the original?

I always enjoyed the Foo Fighters cover of "Baker Street," which had originally been done by Gerry Rafferty (of Stealer's Wheel). The original was really good, especially with the saxophone, but I've always like the Foo Fighters and thought they did a good job with the remake.

The all time best is "All Along the Watchtower" Hendrix was better than the original.

I love the Foo Fighters, but don't think I have heard their version of this song. I will have to find it.

I always liked '19th Nervous Breakdown" from the Rolling Stones, but really enjoyed Jason and the Scorchers version of it.

One of my favorites is a lesser known cover from John Waite of the Hank Williams Sr classic "I'm so lonesome I could cry". Just his voice and a dobro as the only instrument. It is excellent IMHO.

I also really liked Steve Earle's cover of 'Dead Flowers' from the Rolling Stone as well as his cover of "Six days on the road" from Dave Dudley.

Jeff Buckley -- "Hallelujah" (originally Leonard Cohen)

Pearl Jam -- "Last Kiss" (originally Wayne Cochran and the CC Riders, but more famously J Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers... Guess that means this one counts twice)

I liked GnR version of Live and Let Die better.

For me Knockin' on Heaven's Door by Guns and Roses.

Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails.

Elton John's "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds".

Grand Funk Railroad's "The Locomotion".

"Gin n Juice" remade by Phish (not really Phish but thats who everybody thinks remade it).

Allison Krauss' version of Keith Whitley's "When you say nothing at all" is very good.

For me Knockin' on Heaven's Door by Guns and Roses.
Oh good Lord! That was horrific!!! :puke:

The Eagles cover (sorry Jim Shue) of Tom Waite's "Ol '55" and Jackson Browne's "Take it Easy"

The aforementioned Dylan covers:

+ Hendrix' version of "All Along the Watchtower"

+ The Band's version of "I Shall Be Released"

+ Peter, Paul and Mary's "Blowin' in the Wind"

+ The Byrd's cover of "Mr. Tamborine Man"

+ Not a hit but off the No Nukes album: Loved the cover of "The Times They are a Changin'" by James Taylor, Graham Nash and Carly Simon
